I live about 2 hours north of Florence. While I more often fly into Bologna, Verona, or Milan Orio al Serio, I have done this on occassion when it's especially cheaper to fly into Rome. I just continue past Florence on the train part of the trip.

It takes about two and a half hours on the train between Fiumicino Airport and Florence. There is a train station at the airport. You will need to take a train to Roma Termini station (the Leonardo Express) and change there to a train to Florence. Your total cost from the airport to Florence will be 47.10 euro using a high speed train (Eurostar) from Rome to Florence. The station in Florence is a short walk from the Duomo. The old town there is pretty compact; it's very easy to get around when you arrive.

You can check the specific train schedules here (in English): http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. Enter Fiumicino Aero for the airport stop.

From Fiumicino airport you'll need to get to Rome Termini station - there should be a shuttle bus, check the airport website: http://www.adr.it/content.asp?L=3&idmen=199

From Rome it will take around 1 1/2 hours to get to Florence. Check TrenItalia for timetables, prices etc: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovie/util/inglese.jsp. As for the distance between Rome and Florence - well, if you've Googled it you should know the answer.

Since you're moving to Italy, have you sorted out a visa yet?

You have some good answers so far - I would also add looking at flights to Bologna as well as Pisa. What city are you coming from? It is 1 1/2 hours from Rome to Florence on the Eurostar train - this is the faster, more expensive train. Cheaper regional trains are much slower. You also have to factor in the time it will take to get to Roma Termini from the airport - so you are looking at at least 2 1/2 hours to 3 realistically.

Also, if the train is 30 Euro one way, that is another $50, then you also have shuttle bus or taxi fare - so maybe a flight to a closer airport looks a little better once you add those costs in.

I flew to Fiumicino, rome and only because I got there past 10:00pm. I took a taxi, and it took about 25 minutes to my hotel, which was near the train station.

The instructions that I got from the hotel in Rome read as follows:
From the Fiumicino airport, take the local train service, called Leonardo Express, leaving every 30 minutes for Termini Station. Once you are at the Termini Station. you can then buy your ticket and go to Florence. I went to Florence by train.

Carousel
Fiumicino airport is quite a distance from Florence, though it is on the side of Rome that would be easier. Have you checked out the possibility of flying to Pisa which is close to Florence.

After arriving in Rome, you will need to take the Leonardo Express (FM1). The train departs every 1/2 hour at :05 and :035. The price is 11 euros and the travel time is 1/2 hour.

From Termini station you take the train to Florence. There are numerous trains everyday and the cost is about 40 euros and the travel time is 1.5 hours.

This isn't that bad of a journey of itself but it's probably a long haul to from wherever you're from to Rome.

If you want to buy your tickets on-line, you can and that would guarantee that you get the train you want, but you don't have to and buying the train ticket at Temini will be cheaper.
