It's expensive if you come from the US because of the weakness of the us dollar.
The life in cities like Rome, Milan and Florence is very expensive, in comparison with other italian and european cities.

I can give you some prices
one night for two persons in a three stars hotel in a touristic city: 80-120 euros

a meal 15-30 euros
shoes: 75-100 euros..etc.

EXPANSIVE ?? No. We Italians we must stay inside our territory since I don't think the other bordering Countries would be too happy with our EXPANSION.
However I guess you rather mean "Expensive" and my answer is "yes and not". Yes if you want live in tourist towns and buy / travel wherever / however you like. No if you keep out of the tourist routes, you buy food and other items at the supermarkets, you eat pizza and sandwiches, you travel by train or by bus, etc, etc.
If you are American you'll have for sure a bad impact with our currency ,the Euro, since its rate of exchange with the USDollar (mainly in these last weeks) has ugly increased and this makes for you everything even more expensive.

Hi,

If you follow the main tourist hoards through Tuscany, Venice, Florence, Rome etc. it is expencive!

I have been travelling throughout Apulia and Calabria and have found these areas to be quite low-priced.

There are a lot to see and explore, top seafood and kind people!

Please read this article to have some info on Apulia:

No, Italy is not expansive. I believe it is smaller than California.

very expensive i don't know how people in italy can make it since they changed to euro, for the same money you spend in italy for a weeks stay you can for one month elsewhere just came from there and will not return again

Its not as expansive as you might think.

lou
like any country, the citys, the tourists atractions are the most expansive. the southern part of italy is less expansive, and i think, far more beautiful then the north. you can buy a pizza there for around 4 euro. it depends on how you travel, but i think it really isnt that bad if you stay away from all the nonsense
