Perugia is not so small :)
Apart from being Perugia itself a city with lot of interest for touristic/cultural reasons (so, it make sense to "stay open" because of tourists), what do really close down are small shops, today, while you're sure going to find lot of bar (pubs) and restaurants open, as well as any big store/mall.

Some years ago was different, was more easy to find a lot of places closed (there were more little stores and less big stores); I live in small (for real :) town and the difference is really evident.

Yes, exactly. The people in the small towns vacation in August. They go to the beach. Not everything everywhere will be closed. You can take field trips to Florence, Venice, Milan, or other Big cities near Perugia. Or, you can go to the beach with everyone else. Italy is very different than what we are used to in America, as far as our conveniances go. You will have a wonderful trip and great experiences. Just remember to be open-minded and patient about some things being closed and explore other options....HAVE FUN- it will be a trip to remember....

I guess you're going to the university for foreigners. Perugia is a great and beautiful city and is full of students even in August. some shops and business might be closed but it's still a good place to go in August: the whole Umbria region is beautiful, the beach is not so far, and Perugia is not so hot in summer, so you will be OK.

I live in Rome, and for me august is the BEST month to visit the city and go around .
I love it!
I don't know about Perugia..

It will be very hot, because the medieval walls and streets hold the heat.
Anyway Perugia is wonderful, in every period.
You should save some money to take some trip, Perugia is in the centre of Italy, in a continental position, but from there you can go to Rome, Florence, Rimini, Monte Conero in 2/3 hours, so you could visit beautiful cities or just relax on the beach.

I'm Italian and I live in a small town near Milan. In august it's damn hot, you can't breathe, but it's not true that everything is closed.

Perugia is definitely not that bad in August.
You should go there and enjoy!
Umbria is also my favorite region in Italy.

August in Italy all the factory's close and all the Italians go on holiday. Many stay in Italy and flood the beaches. It is also VERY hot in Italy in August. However I was in Italy his pass August and I would not trade it for the world. You have a month to see what you want to see so really no rush. I hate to say it but the worst thing about Italy anytime if the year is Americans....I know a'm being booed now but its true. People working in Italy and tending to us or really anyone are in no rush its the Italian way....even slower in the south. Italy's beaches and water are sooo clean and so much different from the beaches her (New Jersey) If you find yourself getting stressed from the people...Hit the beach grab a drink and enjoy the cleanest air you ll ever take it.
