I was there in the spring and it was hot, hot, hot - and lovely. We went to Firenza (Florence). The narrow cobblestone streets, beautiful statues, and quaint little shops made the visit a true pleasure. You must go to Ponte Vecchio - the marketplace is fabulous. |

It is my favorite country to visit.
Rome is fantastic, lots of history.
Florence is great, lots of art.
Venice is kind of dirty, but an experience you should have.
The Amalfi Coast is gorgeous.
Cinque Terre is great for hikers/backpackers.
Tuscany is breathtaking - I LOVE Siena!
Have a great time! |

It depends on where you are going. The very south is poor and dry. The north is lush with has warm beachs and good wine. |

Italy is my favorite country in the world! It is by far the most spectacular in culture, history, and cuisine. I consider myself an expert on Italy travel so I will give you some pointers and such on what to expect and do.
See it all. I don't know which city you are going to but my first piece of advice is to see the sites. If you are headed to Rome see the Colosseum, the Trevi fountain, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, the Pantheon, and the Roman Forum. You are paying a bunch of money to travel over there and you will really regret it if you miss out. If you travel to Florence, see Michelangelo's David, Piazza della Signoria, and Ponte Vecchio.
Next. Eating. The Food in Italy is the BEST! If you think Italian food is good already. Wait until you taste the real thing. Your best bet is to stay away from places on main square as it will be quite expensive to eat. A Coca-Cola in St. Marks Square, Venice is anywhere from 5-9 Euros. OUCH! If you walk off the main street a little you can always find a great place to eat that wont cost too much. Also great are bars, and in Italy a bar is a very different thing. They are usually open all day from breakfast through dinner and change their offerings throughout the day. Many places are like a lunch counter where you just point at something in the case that looks appetizing and they scoop you some out. These places are very cost efficient for Italy as well. Also not surprising a glass of house wine is generally cheaper than a bottle of water. (Not that you need to buy water anyway...almost all fountains in Italy are safe to drink from thanks to the aqueducts that the romans built centuries ago. Just carry around a bottle and fill it everytime you pass one if you are so inclined, and don't worry...you'll see everyone else doing it.) And please...DON'T MISS OUT ON THE GELATO! Try every flavor!
Getting Around. The best way to see everything is get around moslty by foot. Especially in the city. Most of Italy's cities are compact because they were established in the middle ages when noone had cars or Vespas. You can usually see everything that a city has to offer getting there on foot. I've walked to every site to see in Rome in one day. It isn't as far as you think. You can do the same in Florence, Venice, Naples. Anywhere. And every city has taxi service and some cities have subway. Now for getting in between places if you are visiting more than one is a rail pass. They are cheap and easy to use. Visit Trenitalia's website for information on how the passes work.
Weather. The weather in May in Italy is impeccable. There may be a few late afternoon showers, but it should mostly be sunny and warm the entire time that you are there. Think Florida for weather in the summer.
Italy is such a varied place, with many different things to see, and even varied culture from North to South. It is so hard to pick just one place to go! But in my honest opinion, there is nothing like Roma, La città eterna. (The eternal city) There is something for everyone and many options on where and how to stay. Whether you are looking for a luxury Hotel in the countryside or a hotel right on Via del Corso in Rome to watch the people and motorist go by, Italy has something just for you.
Since I am sure most of your vacation is planned already: Have a great time in Italia! Buon viaggio in Italia! |

Truly amazing you will find the people friendly and VERY laid back - no politics - no television --- nothing bet eating and drinking''
YOu will be surprised by the transitions from the busy streets of Rome to Tuscay and the Italian countryside which is agrculture based You see fields and hills of green then all of sudden you see a big hill off in the distance and you think you see 2-3 homes on top - you get closer and you see more homes then you drive up up up winding roads and find a city on top of the Hill --- Amazing The MUST see places to go
Rome
Firenzie (Florence)
Sienna
Tuscany in general
Montelpulciano
Assissi
The above are all within 2 hours of Rome |

Yes, the country is beautiful...as are the people. I have found them to be the nicest and most willing to help. Of course as in any city or country you might meet some who are looking to profit off of a tourist, but in all my experiences in Italy I have never come across anyone who was anything other than colorful and helpful. I do not know to which part you are traveling, but you will be immersed in culture, history, art, food, and la dolce vita. Go with an open mind and a free spirit and you will enjoy every minute........Have a fantastic time!! I love it so much I moved here from New York City!! |

Yeah, it's one of the most beautiful countries in the world! I love the Amalfi Coast! I'm a history buff, so I loved Rome and the ancient ruins! The food is fantastic. Venice was delightful, despite the many tourists. You will love it! |

Italy is fantastic. I would highly recommend Florence. It is a great cultural city. Also go to Venice...but explore off the beaten path. You can find great little cafes/restaurants that are less expensive than the tourist traps. If you go further south, watch out in Naples. People by the train station there will attempt to pickpocket you.
You must take the ferry from the Bay of Naples to Capri...a beautiful little island. I would also recommend Sorrento, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast - all wonderful vistas. |
