Is January too cold to walk around and sightsee? |
We will be going to Italy for two weeks in January. We plan on taking the train and doing a lot of walking and sightseeing. Will the month of January hinder any of this? Is January just too cold to walk around and enjoy the city? Has anyone gone in January?
Thank you. |

I suppose it depends on what you're used to and what you consider too cold. I've lived here in northern Italy for about nine years and go out exploring most weekends including in January - the train system is a great way to get around here. While there might be a day or too that's particularly cold, it's not usually too cold to enjoy yourself. A chill in the air, makes stopping at one of the stands for a vin brulè to warm up even better. |

I've been to Europe a few times in january, it's not bad at all. Remember that generally the further east you go the colder it gets.
I prefer chilly over warm in Europe though because Europe ia all about walking, and it's nicer to walk in chilly weather than it is in warm because you don't sweat as much.
I don't know where you plan to go, but the Eiffel tower gets pretty cold and Venice. Other than that I've never had a problem with wearing only a light jacket.
You can look up average weathers in city's by month's, that should give you a good idea.
Hope you have fun my friend! |

Last two winters were quite warm. Generally in january it's not too cold, it depends on the destination, but i live in northern Italy and, during the day, temperatures go rarely under 0°C, often they are superior 5-10°C |

It depends on where you plan to go: the north of Italy (Milan, Turin...) is really cold.
The climate is very nice in the center part of Italy (Florence, Tuscany and Rome).
If you need suggestions about accommodations and itineraires, mainly in Tuscany, feel free to contact me (I'm an Italian Tourist Operator)
bye |
