Is Roma Termini zone, in Rome - Italy, safe at night? |
My wife, little daughter and I are going to Rome - Italy - soon, and we have booked a hotel near Roma Termini, next to Vittorio Emanuele II square, and we are a little worried about the safety of the zone. Is it safe? |

Roma Termini has a number of good hotels on the “quiet” side ( Right facing the Station - via Cavour to via Nazionale and beyond; Left facing the Station: Piazza Indipendenza to via XX Settembre and beyond). Avoid the side going to and including Piazza Vittorio Emanuele 2. It is not “dangerous”, but peopled by a high number of vagrants, hawkers and night owls. It is not a nice place to bring your family after hours. On average Rome is very safe, Italy has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe (1,23 homicide index compared to 5,9 US and an average of 2,5 in Europe) but certain areas are better left to locals, who know how to move around. |

I am Italian and I live to Rome. My brother-in-law lives to Public square Vittorio Emanuele II with its family from many years and it is accustomed to this place. I don't like this place and never I'll living there. If you can change hotel, change it, I think . Via Nazionale is enough close to Roma Termini, but it is one better way, more touristic way,

I don't know this hotel, but it is near to Termini.
otherwise also the link that it has left Cycwynner to you, http://www.rentalinrome.com/, it has one good choice of hotels in optimal touristic zones.
Sorry for my bad english. |

Roma is a large city. Safety in a large city is always questionable. But there is less to fear in Rome than in most North American cities.
There are more pick pockets and panhandlers in this area but not as much violent crime as in an American or Canadian City.
Be attentive and enjoy the experience. |

I stayed in Rome in Eurostars International Palace hotel- via Nazionale, few steps from Termini Station. But, it was O.K., very safe area and very central too, so Enjoy your trip ! |

Termini zone is not as dangerous as other part of the city. You might not find it very nice at night but do not worry about anything. Especially all around Vittorio Emanuele square there are a lot of restaurants opened till 1 am so you will find a lot of people hanging around that area even at night! |

It is not so bad but I wouldn't take any risks. Try to avoid specially the west side of the train station since many drunkards and "senza tetto" spend the night there. If you are with your family don't worry. Anyways, as in all major cities, try not to get back to your hotel too late in order to avoid any kind of problems. My sister and brother in law also stayed in a hotel very near that zone and didn't have any problems. Enjoy your stay in Rome, you'll love it. |

No worries. Have stayed nearby your location and will again in June. I particularly like the small streets between the train station (then a bit left) before your hotel. Don't trust the taxi drivers for a moment. Worst in all of Europe. You are only a couple of kilometers -- if off via Nationale -- from the train station and a taxi diriver is likely to take you 5 to 10 Kms out of the way. Get a price before you go; don't accept, "What is on the meter." And be very careful in the money you hand the driver as they are very quick to substitute your 20 or 10 euro for a five that they say you handed them.
Also watch for the pick pockets.
Great place. You will have a good time....even with the taxi scammers and the occasional pick pocket. Pretty harmless really. |

Depends on what part on the termini - you are near Vittorio Emanuele which is the not so nice part. You will be safe but use a little common sense (as in all main cities) as pick pocketers are rife throughout Rome.
I live in Rome and I know the area you are talking about. |
