If you are careful and don't fall into tourist traps (like places right in front of the attractions that charge you 40 euro for a pizza and a salad!) you won't spend too much. Transport is cheap, entrance to the sites reasonable, and you can find affordable accommodation easy enough if you book early. September/October is low season too.

Rome like any tourist city in the world can be expensive. Don't go for lunch at the restaurant with the terrace overlooking the vatican! Avoid all places where the menu is written in more languages. I live in Italy and have for years, but am native to Canada. Sometime my husband and myself go out and only speak english just to see the difference....yes unfortunatly they see tourist stamped on your forehead and anything can happen. Its not only here though....its anywhere there is a large flux of tourists. Stay at a hostel or hotel away from tourist attractions, the same goes for eating out. I don't find Rome any more expensive than any other city. Unfortunatly with the exchange of the euro rather high right now, it may seem more expensive than lets say 3 years ago, lets not talk about when there was still the lira. Rome is a must see, and what ever the cost. Buy a lets go, or some other economical travel guide.

Rome can be extremely expensive if you are not careful, especially if you are from the US, and suffering the devalued dollar. However, there are things you can do to have a great and inexpensive trip there without giving much up. In fact, when done right, you will have a better and more authentic experience. Here are some tips for you:

1) Get an apartment rental
Don't stay in hotels. Search the net for apartment rentals. You can get a nicer and bigger place for 1/3 of what you would pay for a hotel.

2) Stay off the beaten path
You can stay in a small village outside of the city instead of staying in a tourist-ridden area. This simple act can cut your lodging cost again in half. Rome and the surrounding areas are extremely well-connected by rail, and you can easily stay outside of the city and get into downtown more quickly than you would even from many of the city hotels.

3) Be careful where you eat!
The closer you are to a tourist attraction (Colosseum, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, etc), the more expensive it will be. Restraunts in touristy areas take full advantage of the fact that tourists don't know where to eat. There are always warning signs, however. Here are some things to watch out for: Restaurants that advertise a 'Tourist Menu', places with English menus, places full of people speaking English, places that look too much like they came out of a romantic Italian movie (Most authentic Italian restaurants have great food, but very little atmosphere). If you watch out for the warning signs, you will not only pay less, but eat much better!

4) Take the subway, trains and buses. Taxis are quite expensive and will usually waste a great deal of time. As I said, Rome is EXTREMELY well connected, and you can get everywhere with their subway system (Called Metro).

These few pointers will make a world of difference for you, and if you follow them, you will find that Rome is not expensive. Remember this: The average salary in Italy is quite low, so the locals cannot pay the kind of prices that tourists pay. Act like a local and you will have an amazing and inexpensive experience.

One side note to the person that said September and October are cheaper than summer: As you will see in my source listing below, I am in the tour business in Italy. September and October are two of the three most popular months for tourism. May is the other one. For Rome, July and August are considered low season.

I think its expensive, we looked at going to italy for our honeymoon in 2006, but went to kenya for 2 weeks with 3 days on safari and 11 nights at a 5 star all inc hotel, which was much cheaper than italy! but if you want to go, then just do it cos if its a dream then its worth the money and if dont you will regret it! you will prob be able to get cheaper deals, just look on websites, booking things online is often cheaper

The only reason many people say that Rome is expensive is because when they go to a bar they can not accept the fact that there are two different prices for the drinks.
Sitting at the table drinks may cost you almost four times as much.

I didn't find Rome expensive ...but then I suppose it depends what country you live in...I'm going back in September myself and can't wait ..we found it cheap to eat and because everything is within walking distance you don't have that added expense of paying for travel...there are many ways to save money when on a holiday...one thing is to eat where the locals eat and walk as much as possible...Rome is a wonderful interesting place ..I'm sure you will enjoy it very much.

Even drinks are very expensive - a bottle of water will set you back nearly 8 Euros! Rooftop bar/restaurant is way too expensive but Via Venetto is one block over and had some of the best food I have ever tasted for very reasonable prices (get the Risotto Pescatore from Chaio Bello -- mmmmm). The hotel is very close to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Bourgeisie Gardens (sp?) which are all must sees for anyone visiting. You will need to take a cab to the Vatican and the Collesseum. I would reccomend this hotel to anyone and the best part is that after a long day of walking around they have a hot tub/sauna area to relax and take a load off of your feet. It was so enjoyable to come back for a soak after a long day walking around and it is an added benefit that any weary traveler will appreciate.

Some places are expensive yes!
If you find a hotel near the centre of Roma it will cost you! But if you find a hotel just a little bit out of rome it should be ok!
And when you go travel around rome it's maybe better to take some snacks with you..or just know where the right restaurants are..cause some snack bars/restaruants can really rip you off!
Other then that you're ok..and myabe to visit certain museums ecc..it might cost you from
5-15 euros!
But if i were you i would wait maybe until next year..since the euro is really high!!!!!!!!

Roma is expensive, but not so bad in September or October as it is in the main tourist times in the summer. Try the hostels near Roma Termini for a place to stay.

The city is quite expensive and accomodation can be a bit of a nightmare! I used http://www.holistay.com/italy/ to book my accomodation in the end.
Or you could also try http://www.travelwise.com, they also offer good value for money.

Rome is not expensive but it is not cheap if you know what I mean. It is not as expensive as some cities, but it is not as cheap as others. You can find budget options by staying in a hostel etc...it is the same as most Euopean cities - so will not break the bank but you will have to put a little money aside. Entry fees are about 6 - 13 euro depending what you want to see. A lot of the sites are for free and if you are a student you often get discounted entry with valid id. You can easily walk around the city so would not have to spend a lot on transport, and if you do this is not expensive. Hotels can be pricy but as I said stay at a hostel and you'll also meet like minded travellers who too are on a budget

yes it is expensive. It's the most expensive city I have ever been in. But , you should still go. Only the touristy parts are expensive I dare say.

I can't see ordinary Italians paying some of the asking prices at the touristy parts. They are not so daft.

Rome has been ripping off tourists since the late 17th century. It's what they do!!.
