Although Sicily has its own unique culture, it is currently part of Italy. At various times in the past, it has been independent, a part of Spain, and a part of Greece.

Yep, with it own culture and everything. Of course by them being so close they share a lot of the same cultural aspects, but in essence they are two separate countries.

In Sicily a dialect is spoken.
The Sicilian Dialect is "distinct enough from Standard Italian to be considered a separate language" but is not recognised as an official language.
Sicily is definately part of Italy and NOT a country by itself !!!

Catowner
Sicily is part of Italy, but is looked down upon by mainlanders. There is a movement wanting Sicily to be granted independence from Italy, though.

It is part of Italy (Just as Long Island is part of the state of New York), and is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and has about 5 Million residents.

It's part of Italy, separated from it by the Messina Straits (about 5 kilometers distance). In 2012 a suspension bridge, the world's longest, should unite the island and the Italian mainland. Corsica, though, is part of France, though Sardinia, yet another island, is part of Italy.

Sicily is the largest Island in the Mediterranean. It's 25,700 square miles in size and has 5,000 inhabitants.
