Is Vatican City considered a country?

From some sources I have heard that it is a city-state; however, it is implied that it is a country. I am really not sure. Please answer and if you can, cite a reliable source (I trust Wikipedia, by the way).

The Vatican is a country, and this is what the use of the word 'state' means. City is used to define the type of state (country), therefore it is a city-state (country). Geographers use eight criteria to define an independent state (country) and the Vatican meets all these criteria. An independent State (country):

Has space or territory which has internationally recognized boundaries.

Has people who live there on an ongoing basis.

Has economic activity and an organized economy. A country regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money.

Has the power of social engineering, such as education.

Has a transportation system for moving goods and people.

Has a government which provides public services and police power.

Has sovereignty. No other State should have power over the country's territory.

Has external recognition. A country has been accepted as an independent state by other countries.

The Vatican's own website is a good one to check: http://www.vaticanstate.va/EN/State_and_Government/History/Vatican_City_today.htm

Yes, it is what remains of the ancient State of The Church which in the past, until the unification of Italy ( in 1861), covered the Central part of Italy... But Pope doesn't want to be annexed to the Kingdom of Italy ( he wants remain the sovereign in his state) so he excommunicated Italy and he declared himself political prisoner...

In 1929 under Mussolini, the Pope managed to have an own state thank Lateran Treaty : Vatican city ( 0,44 kmq), it is a symbolical state which is composed by St. Peter Square, St. Peter Basilica, Vatican Museums, ad many other monuments, it has got also his euro ( with his picture on the face of the coins), there aren't official language in Vatican City, but "de facto" they speak Italian...

It is the only state in the world with an absolute monarchy where the Pope is the king...

Why don't you just look it up yourself it would take less time then typing the question, and it wouldn't cost you points. But anyway it is its own country.

Yes, Vatican city is a country. You are not allowed inside unless you have special permission. The only part you are allowed in is the Vatican Museum. There you can check out the Sistine Chapel.

In the old days, you used to be able to bring your passport to the Vatican Museum's post office and get a stamp but they don't do that anymore.
