Actually it is the capital of the country called the Holy See. But it is refered to as the Vatican. It is a recognized city-state, but everything that runs it belongs to Italy. The phone lines, water lines, electricity. It is completely dependent on Italy and also follows all laws of Italy and is under Rome jurisdiction.

neerdowel
Yes, the smallest in the world.

okbyajc
It is an independent City-State. That is, NOT part of Italy.

bleacherbrat34
yes it is . if visiting beware of the vendors, there are ton of them. you can buy the same in the Vatican gift Shop. Some of the Rosary's are made in the USA.

samanthajanecaroline
Yes it is a state within a state. It has its own postal service, numberplates, etc.
