Is it better to visit Rome on the weekends or during the week?

This visit would be in the month of March

NMN,
March is most likey going to be cold or wet or both cold and wet in Rome, weekend or weekdays will be great because it is Rome. If this is a first visit and sightseeing is top of the agenda, weekdays would definitely be the choice. As one poster pointed out lines are much shorter during the week than on weekends. Of course you could also try visiting some lesser known sight where there are never lines weekday or weekend, how about a church decorated with the bones and skulls of long dead monks? There is a church near the Coliseum where you can go down some stairs to an older church that is now underground, and there is another set of stairs in the older church that lead down to a Roman Temple! http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1372380/off_the_beaten_path_in_rome.html?cat=16.
If you are going to Rome to hang out with local friends, chances are the weekends will give you more time to spend with them, if you like flea markets, the weekends are much better times to enjoy what Rome has on offer, same is true of the nightlife and nightclub scene.
Have fun regardless

If your main objective is to see as many of the historic and tourist attractions then you will find these places less busier during the week.
If you intend to devote more time to the Rome nightlife then I would suggest the weekend.
Alternatively arrive on a Wednesday/Thursday and leave on a Sunday. Get the tourist things done on Thursday and Friday, and leave Friday evening and Saturday evening for the social scene.

It depends of course of what you like and dislike...

If you fear the crowd, obviously it is better to visit Rome during the week (vatican museum,...).

If you want to see St Peter's and Benoit XVI, you know the answer...

If you want to see Via del Corso not only with tourists and feel the vibes of the city during a break, week-ends are also a good choice.

Enjoy your stay in Rome !

hello! i live near rome! it's better in the week because in the weekends there is a lot of traffic! On march rome is beautiful! Remember to visit the place called "Field of Flowers","Square of Spain" and especially "the Trevi fountain"...a popular legend says that if you shoots some cent in the water, you are going to come again to rome!

sorry for my english not very perfect_FeDe

Personally I would recommend that you visit on weekends. The weekends do get a lot busier and it is already busy enough on week days so week days 100% I would recommend.
It is also cheaper on weekdays if you are staying there as well.

omgosh im going during march too! :)
