Depends where you are going and where you are from.
We lived in Northern Italy (Ligurian region - includes Genoa area) and it was cold enough for snow and winter jackets, even in March.
We visited Rome in Nov and found it chilly during the day, so would probably be safe to assume it could be chilly in Mar as well.
It also depends on what you consider warm or cold. If you are from the south, you might consider 45 cold - if you are from the north, you might throw off your jacket and exclaim how warm it feels to you...
The best way to find out the average temp for a place you will be visiting is to go to
www.weatherchannel.com
type in the city you plan to visit - or the nearest "big" city. This will tell you both the normal highs and lows as well as a 10-day forecast just in case the weather is going to be unseasonably cool or warm.
Enjoy your trip! (Buon viaggio!)

It's warm there, probably rain though

Much like NY.
They will still use heat.

Some of the very best Alpine snow skiing in all of the EU is in Northern Italy. It depends where in Italy you plan to visit in March as to how the weather will be for your trip. In the south, be prepared for spring rains

It depends on where you are going. You've heard of the Italian Alps - where they had the Winter Olympics in 2006? Otherwise, think California weather, nice, but not hot in March.
