Is it dangerous to stay near the train station in Florence?

I have a room booked at Hotel Diplomat and would like to know if this area is safe or not.

Florence is safe...The area around Santa Maria Novella and train station has a lot of very expensive Hotels and tourists in and out of hotels or the city, but if you take the normal precaution I will considered the place"safe" do not walk alone too late at night, do not carry all your documents and money with you ,and be alert anyway, I has been in that area by myself but of course be Smart!! anyplace in the world is unsafe if you do not exercise good judgment

There are many bag thieves in Florence but not only near the train station - they are everywhere. So, be careful.

It is dangerous to stay near train stations at night in almost every city of the world (drugs,...) But you need not necessarily walk around at night.

You will not be in danger inside your hotel, but i agree with the other anserer, don't walk around by yourself in the middle of the night. But in general, Florence is very safe and I wouldn't worry too much. Enjoy!

I stayed with a friend outside the train station in Florence-- yep, on the ground with the homeless with our sleeping bags and large American backpacks and we were absolutely fine.

No, it wasn't intentional and it wasn't the best decision that we ever made but then point is be aware, don't be a target and don't worry too much.
