Hello,
The fastest way will be by train, usually taking 4.5 hours. This ticket will cost 51 euros for 2nd class and 74 euros for 1rst class. You will be able to see a lot of small towns from the train. It is a nice ride and gives you the chance to relax. There is a diner car where you can get food and drinks. They have plugs for computers at your seat and bins for luggage if you have any. Usually the train will make a few stops but unless you buy tickets for the individual cities, stay on the train. These stops only take about 3-5 minutes just to let people on and off. They are very quick.
If you do take the train, make sure you take the train all the way to the S. Lucia station, not just Mestre. Mestre is the stop before getting to the islands, St. Lucia is the islands.

EASY EASY EASY take the train much more comfortable than the bus, Italian busses are crazy and trains have more room and air conditioning. |

I hope you have already been to Florence - that would be an obvious stop for a few days between Rome and Venice.
You can also take the night train from Rome to Venice, since it is 6 hours it might be worth it. Not much to see on the way, but it will save money on accomodation and free up valueable time - time you can use for sightseeing instead of sitting on the train. |

Its about a 4-5 hour drive I would drive it or take the train. If you take the train it puts you right on the island unlike driving. Driving you get to see everything and it more comfortable, Its not a bad drive I've done it a lot since I live in Italy, but if you rent a car they are all stick shift. |

It is easy, by bus or train.
The sites on the way by either means of transportation are the beautiful Italian countryside, and quaint villages you pass through |

With either mode of travel you choose you'll only travel the quickest route: bus on the highway and train, well - on the rails. The train ride will for sure be more panoramic - at least this has been my overall experience. In any case, train travel will allow you to get up and move around more freely than on a bus. The train usually even has a bar - so cold beers and or a not to bad coffee is 100% better than what you'll get offered (to buy) on a bus.
By the by - there is no bar service on public bus transportation. The bus may stop at a rest area for a nature break and a a quick coffee and that's it. Take the train. |
