I live in Rome, and I agree with the users above me that have said that here it's possible to eat something good with not so much money.

I've travelled a bit and i can say with no doubt that, for example, eat in Rome is really less expensive than in London and REALLY REALLY REALLY less expensive than in Paris.

Of course it depends about what you want to eat: if you want a 5 star restaurant you'll spend a lot: for example, if you go to "Clemente alla Maddalena", near the Parliament and the Pantheon, you'll pay 25€ (31$) for an appetizer. But just in front of this restaurant, in the same square, you'll find other 5 restaurants where you can have lunch or dinner with 15/20€.

Like someone else suggested, a good idea is to avoid those restaurants that have their list wrote in english: they're touristic places, and you'd pay a lot to eat not so good food. Try to search for little restaurants (or, also better, for "trattorias") in the side streets of the city center, especially in the district of Trastevere. You'll find a lot of places where you'll eat with 10/15€.

You can also go to a restaurant of the "Pastarito" chain: they're cheap but nice restaurants where you can eat a huge (really, really huge!) dish of pasta with 7/8€. There are 10 Pastarito restaurants here in Rome, and you can find them here: http://www.pastarito.it/it/locali/citta.asp?citta=Roma

Just a last suggestion: if you want to really try the real center Italy cooking take one day to visit the so-called zone of the Roman Castles (at the south of the city), that is that group of small towns like Rocca di Papa, Marino, Ariccia, ecc. Asking to local people you'll find easily some place to eat with 20€. In Italy, when someone eats with good appetite, we say that it's a "Good fork". Well, my boyfriend is definitely a Good fork, but when we go to eat there he doesn't manage to arrive at the end! A lot of people don't even arrives at the end of the appetizers... Try to go there, you'll thank me.

Enjoy Rome!

I agree that you can eat either cheap or expensive in Rome, but disagree that cheap means bad. There are a lot of very reasonable pizzerias and smaller restaurants in Rome, just get a little way away from the main touristy areas. As a rule of thumb, if there's a menu in English on display OUTSIDE, it's overpriced

Orla C
It can be. If you look around for 'trattoria' down the smaller streets, you'll find some very good deals. Or try 'spaghetteria' or 'pizzeria' places, those are cheap and good.

Not expensive but enough. I'm italian for anything my contact msn is this: annoiato1988@hotmail.it

Avoid the trattorias.. go where you see locals.. also, in the tourist places like Trevi fountain, the cafe/resto owners are smooth to offer you a place outside ask before how much it costs, I once paid a coffee 1 Euro inside, 5 Euros outside. Pizza al taglio are the best, fresh and true Italian pizza slices. A chain called Spizzico is also good in Italy.

The cheapest way is pizzeria. Here you can have a pizza (or, usually, a pasta course), some starters and one beer spending 10-15 euros. You eat well, enough, typical Italian and you don't waste your money.
In an expensive restaurant (ristorante) or also in a cheap one (trattoria) you will spend at least 25-30 euros.
Don't trust locals with menus exposed in English or in other foreign languages: there you will eat worse and pay more. Go where you see lots of Italians and few tourists.

Hi!!!
It depends from the place you'll choise!!!!!!
If you go in a so called "trattoria" you won't spend a lot!But my advice is to enter in a supermarket and you'll find very good prices...

It's like other cities. There are places that are very expensive, there are inexpensive places and everything in between. You can actually eat quite well at reasonable cost - especially if you get out of the immediate vicinity of the tourist attractions. It is not always true that the cheap food is low quality or that the expensive food is always good. Restaurants here post menus; you can browse the menus during the day while you're out exploring and decide where to eat based on what appeals to you and what your budget can handle.

You can save a bit by picking up fruits, vegetables, bread, etc in a market rather than always eating out. Or buy a panino in a bar rather than going for a full sit-down meal.

Stan
No, you can find some pizza (by the slice) and a drink for 5 euros. Dinner will be about $10 euros - and breakfast, if a cappucino and pan au chocolat is fine, that should be less than 4 euros.

I like to buy my drinks and snacks at a grocery store which will save you quite a bit over the length of your stay.
