Is it possible to take the tours up Mount Etna in winter (end of December).? |
I am planning to go visit Sicily from Christmas to New Years. Mount Etna is one of the major attractions. I see there are tours organized to the top by buses/cable cars/etc to reach the an extremely high point. Will these tours be open at the end of December?
I wish I could go to Italy in the summer, but I have to go now and cannot figure out where to go! |

If you are there in December, do the tour by all means. Last year in November we were in Nicolosi (the Southern Gateway to the Etna, a delightful town, especially in Winter), we drove to the base and we went right to the top with the Funicular, then with local transport around the top. Great experience. Surrounded by snow, we could see the coast and the Volcano. Well worth the visit. Eerie and unique. |

Yes you can go I have been their many times I lived in Catania and have visited on many times, the only thing about the winter is that if it's to cold or to much snow they will close it down , their is a hotel that sits very close to the top.
I am sorry I have forgotten the name but it's very old and very beautiful and and on clear days you can see the whole Island and sometimes even the main land of Italy. |

The park is open every day, but December to March generally isn't a good period to go due to snow. There are a couple of ski areas on the mountain. This site has some suggestions for that area in December: http://www.volcanoetna.com/blog/2007/09/14/december-travel-ski-in-sicily-winter-holidays-skiing-on-mt-etna/
