Is it safe for an American to visit Italy? |

I, as an American, who has traveled to Italy many times (My wife is Italian) can let you know this: Italy and the United States are at very good terms. This was proved when Italy answered the call to help out in the Iraq conflict and send 3000 of their own troops. Now, you may ask if in Italy doing this, it makes them a target for terrorist? As what happened in London and Madrid, it shows that this certainly could happen. But, then again, it happened right here in the US and I'm not so sure we are that safe still today. What you really have to watch out for in Italy is immigrants that may want to rob you, taxi drivers and shop keepers knowing your not from there and try to charge you more for their services (just like here in the states). Funny story was when we were in Rome (Roma they say) and I spoke to my wife in english while she was buying a bottle of water, the man asked 4 euros for it and my wife yelled in Roma dialect that he was crazy (and probably something else, lol) and the man quickly said that he was sorry and thought that she was a tourist and the water was only 1 euro! For real |
|

?
 |
Yes. How could you possibly have doubts? Terrorists win every time you get scared. Don't give in - live your life and go to Italy. Americans go there every single day - many actually live there.
You should be ashamed for having asked the question. Sorry to be harsh, but I have no patience for the "terrorists will kill me!" mindset. |

my god, you americans are really paranoid, aren't you? No sweat in Italy for you, they are one of the few countries on this planet who still like you a little |

Other than the usual crimes against tourists (burglary from hotel rooms, pickpocketing, subway and bus groping), Italy is safe for Americans.
According to the State Department, the only real security threat to Americans is getting caught up in political protests. These are not targeted against specific Americans so if you are aware of your surroundings, you should be fine. |

Yeah you'll be fine especially if you know some Italian |

Wondering

Yes, but keep your important items close to you. My husband insisted on keeping his passport in his cargo pants pocket. Guess what? It got lifted! Of course! However, I bought a traveler's coat -- with inside pockets for credit cards, etc., and kept my important documents in there -- close to me. I had no problems. Also, just like in USA, do not walk like an afraid victim -- walk with an air of confidence. That helps, too!
Enjoy your trip!! |

Italy is a lovely friendly place. I was living in Rome in 2001 and after 9/11 some of the locals were a bit strange towards Americans. I was in the station with an American friend and some guys shouted abuse at us about war and stuff. Similar things happened a few times but normally Italians are the friendliest people and they are very welcoming. Try to learn some Italian before your trip. |

Italy is one of the safer countries to visit, but as with any big cities, be careful and be aware of your surroundings. Anything can happen, but Italy is beautiful, tons of things to see, and the people are fantastic. Some of them are a bit irritated with Americans, so don't be offended if they seem a bit unfriendly, but they are few and far between.
I lived in Italy - I never felt unsafe !! |

It should be. I'm going over there this summer. However, I have heard from many people who have already gone that some Italian men will grope women and openly express their attraction to a woman more so than in America. For example, an American might say, "She's hott," or whatnot, while an Italian might take it a bit further. This is hearsay, though, so I'm not sure. Other than that, yeah. It's perfectly safe--just watch out for the Gypsies. I don't mean to be racist, but my Italian teacher informed us that some Gypsy merchants (or vendors, whatever you wish to call them) will swarm you and distract you while attempting to steal your purse or wallet. So aside from guarding your belongings, you should be fine! |

Of course it is safe! I went to Rome last year and I'm going back to visit Venice and Rome again this summer. The Italians are very nice people. And like any major city you would visit in the US, guard your possesions! Pickpockets are big in Europe. Just make sure you keep your things secure and you'll have a great time. |

Of course, but any ladies with you will have their fannies pinched. It's a custom - and they do it so well! |
