i think as long as you have had at least 5 years driving experience and are not a frequent accident person, you should be fine. we drove all over for a week and totaled more than 3,000 kilometers in that time. the first day was the scariest with getting used to the city driving versus autostrada, but it was okay from there. my husband had the most fun on the autostrada limit free zones and taking the mountain roads in our little smart forfour. word of caution, be flexible when driving in or near the cities. one sign is all they give for direction usually and you have to be quick to notice. so dont navigate and drive, split the responsibility. be familiar with the road signs before you go, itll save a lot of heartache. one last thing, bring lots of patience and when in doubt give the right of way. |

I drove in Italy for 5 years, its not much different than driving anywhere else but there are a few quirks you'll have to get used to. After your 2nd or 3d day you'll catch on. It can be a little scary for the first few hours. The best thing to do is get out of the city until you get the hang of it. Best of luck. |

My husband says the only real problem is narrow roads. |

it's not more difficult than in other places in particular because in Tuscany you will drive across isolated country roads...
if there's a problem thats represented by some hole (buca...)somewhere by the way but, i repeat, it's not so difficult...
enjoy! |

Sure it is. I've done it lots of times (and other parts of Europe as well). And I'm from North America. Traffic around Florence is really, really bad, though. Just be careful and you'll do o.k. |

With all due respect....
While I do not know your driving abilities, most North American citizens do not have the driving skill and confidence to drive in Europe, especially Italy.
What is considered crazy driving is actually very disciplined. |
