Sure it is. 2 girlfriends and I went around Europe on the trains for 2.5 months. No problems. But keep your stuff with you at all times, or with someone you trust.

The train Paris >> Venice would be 1.5-2 days, I'd say. Travel first class. It can get cold/breezy in the trains so have a jersey handy.

Its safe, I traveled it in 2002, went through Nice and up to Paris. I wouldnt be worried. However if you are on the night train through Pisa Italy, I would be worried. There I had my passport stolen. For the most part the tracks may not be up to regs, but they are safe. Nice is an awesome town, very safe and lots to do.

You bet! I have gone Amsterdam>>Rome>>Sicily, then Genoa>>Marseilles>>Barcelona>>>Paris>>Am... and all sorts of Amsterdam to other places. If you live in the US be sure to simply get a Eurorail Pass. I don't get the big 15 or 30 day pass---unless you plan on doing a lot of travel in Europe over a substantial amount of time. I get the 3,5,or 7 day pass. It even gets cheaper if you are buying a pair of tixs. This is 3,5, or 7 days of travel over something like 3 months. If your journey starts after 7pm it is counted for the next day. I went from Amsterdam to Rome, leaving AMS at 7:30PM and arriving in Rome at 5PM. That was "one" day. The europass is also First Class travel. You have to pay an extra premium for a sleeper or the very fast trains but it is all worth it. Don't worry a bit about any travel in Europe. It is way safer and more civilized than any travel in the US. Just arrive in Europe with your pass, get it verified at any train station, make the reservations for your travel and have a good time. Be sure to leave your American Express Travelers checks at home. They are a waste of time in Europe. Just take your debit card. You debit card works anywhere, at any bank. They got ATMs everywhere, just like in the US. You get a better exchange rate with a debit card. Traveler's checks are just a bit hassle. You have to wait in lines just to cash one of the miserable things. If you need more advice I am at misujry@yahoo.com. Oh, yea, I just read this answer ---"Yes, except if the train or track doesn't meet regulations." That might be true in Russia or Europe in 1904 but that is ridiculous in 2006.

Yes, except if the train or track doesn't meet regulations.
