Is it true, that in Italy you have to wait three years to get a divorce?

Unfortunately, it's true.
You have to go to the Court to separate, then you have to wait three years (in the past, it was five) This law was a compromise, the only way to eliminate the resistance of the catholic parties that struggle against divorce.
Moreover, if husband and wife do not agree to get the dovorce, you have tostart a trial, and it will takes another three-four years

Yes, you must be legally separated for three years.

Three years is the the separation time necessary before you can apply to the court for the actual end of the marriage assuming that there is a mutual agreement to the divorce. Then you have to wait for the judge's decision - usually about a month, but it could be more. If the divorce is contested, it generally takes much longer.
