Is it true that shops and restaurants are closed in Rome in August?

Italians do go on holiday during August . However, Rome is a tourist town so they know that it is their busy time so there will be probably some restaurants and shops closed part of August , but not the entire month.

The shops will post when they are closed so check the windows. I am sure that some in the designer district may be closed.

Here are sites of restaurants in Rome---Read some state when they are closed --- there are several closed in August

Many are, as August is the month that Italians normally take vacation. They save all year and take the month off and go on holiday with their families. However, Rome is a huge tourist city, so there will be plenty open.

...lol....
What is true is that August if the vacation month for Italy workers "Ferie" the workers for companies like Fiat, Ferrari, etc...any lg Company.... but the only time shops close are at noon till 2:00 or 2:30pm for lunch and then reopen....but nothing closes actually for the day, and Restaurants are definetely open! this is when they make their $$!
So go and enjoy yourself and take a rest after you have a nice meal at a nice Restaurant, and after that nice Siesta, it will anyway be around 3:00pm anyways and by then you are ready to go back and tackle the shops again and spend spend spend....lol....:)
My perfect vacation!

No all the shops are not closed. In August many Romans take vacation and therefore many places are closed but not all. They celebrate Ferragusto -usually between August 15-25 then a bank holiday and that is when you find many places closed. I would suggest you contact www.love4adventure.com to see if you can book a tour or multiple tours with them during that time. They are a great tour agency with knowledgable guides.

I have been in Rome in August 2 years ago, the only things I noticed that were closed in August were some designer shops but other than that I am pretty sure most things were open, I had no trouble.

Hi, I'am Italian...It isn't true!!!Rome is a turistic city, so shops and restaurant can't be closed in August ( one of the months when it has more turists)...
