Is it worth going to Forte dei Marmi in Italy, just south of Pisa, on our honeymoon? |
we are flying into Pisa, italy, in late June, and do not know if the beaches and town of Forte dei Marmi are worth visiting, or if it is better to spend more time in Florence and Tuscany |

Forte dei Marmi is very popular but if you are looking for a beautiful coastline in that area, the place to go to is the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is easy to get to from Pisa by taking the train to La Spezia and then changing to a regional train to get to the Cinque Terre (five towns along the coastline).
For information on trains: www.trenitalia.com
For information on the Cinque Terre: http://whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&id_site=826
Note however the Italian seaside towns are swamped by Italians in the summer (in addition to other tourists) and the crowds may be a little overwhelming for a honeymoon. (You are going to be sharing your 2-square-feet of beach with families and couples and everyone else). This goes for all beaches not just those in the Cinque Terre. |

First of all you'll loose your way if you direct south of Pisa to go to Forte dei Marmi. It's located at abt. 27 miles but direction is north. Here's the map and route in case you'll be renting a car at the airport.

Forte dei Marmi is a very nice sea resort, very renowned for its beaches, the night life too and for mondanity in general. However there is almost nothing there worth visiting if yr meaning is landscapes or museums or works of arts. All this you can find instead in Florence and wherever else all over Tuscany region. Forte dei Marni is just offering relax at the seaside, shopping opportunities and nightlife; your choice will be just depending on what you'll prefer doing...!!
If I were you, since you're in honeymoon, I would relax by the seaside and will save the stress of travelling all over Tuscany to a next time, but this is just my personal opinion.
In any case enjoy yr trip.!!! |

I used to live about an hour from Forte dei Marmi along the Ligurian coast. To be honest, I think you can find much more beautiful places to visit for your honeymoon. There are many small Tuscan villages that would be less crowded. You can visit Cinque Terre (as another person suggested) - there are 5 villages there, vineyards that are very romantic, seaside towns built into cliffs, and some great little restaurants. You could go farther along the coast to Portofino - very picturesque with some small beaches nearby, but again - crowded in summer. If I had to choose a place for a honeymoon again it would be either Tuscany or Venice (one of my favorite cities in the world). If you want more detailed suggestions or help, just email me - I will be happy to help!
Oh, and Congratulations and enjoy your honeymoon in Italy! |
