Is italy a country or a state?

Show all answers

Pinguino
The correct English term is "Country"; though in Italian like in most other languages (French, Spanish, ...) the equivalent of the English term "state" (in Italian, "stato") is almost a synonym of "Country" ("Paese"); the difference is "stato" refers more to administartion, while "nazione" (nation) means more "people and culture"; "Country" means that all at once (and a "Country" is totally independent and sovereign).
Some Countries like the US do have "states", like India or Brazil (though with a different level of indipendence, compared to the US), while Italy, France, Spain, Germany, etc. have "regions" and "provinces" (usually both) that *may* have some administrative power.
So, it can actually be confusing.

it is a county, south of switzerland and austria, you need to get a globe or take some basic geography classes, it's not even on the same continent as the United States let alone over 4,000 miles away so how could it be a state??? think that to yourself
