Roberto is the italian, spanish and portuguese version of Robert which in origin is a teutonic (german) name and means "shines for his fame" (ancient: hrohd berht).
Your friend could be of either spanish, portuguese or italian ancestry, or it could be that his mom simply liked the sound of it as opposed to the other.
My son is Robert, with no o, even though he is spanish he was named after my american father, and given the name in english.
:-)

The name Robert is derived from Germanic roots hrod and beraht meaning "fame" and "bright. After becoming widely used in Continental Europe it entered England, where an Anglo-Saxon cognate of the name also already existed, with the Normans.
ROBERTO is the Italian translation.
