it is very safe if you take the usual precautions of staying in busy well lit areas and not showing off money and jewellery, thats just common sense.
as for the transport end i would recommend buying a BIG ticket ( this is what its called, its not a huge ticket that wont fit in your handbag, just incase any smart as*es reading). they are €4 each and last until midnight on the day of validation. they allow you to use the metro, city buses and trams for a whole day for this price which i think is a bargain. i would buy one for the following day on the evening before because where we stayed, the tram was right outside and you cant buy them ON the tram, only at the metro station or a tabacchi, so you just jump on outside the door and punch the ticket - excellent if you couldn't be ar*ed walking to nearest outlet.
DONT eat near major attractions unless your loaded, its very expensive, find somewhere in a quiet side street.
hope this helped.

depends on how you dress!

As long as you blend in and don't stand ot as an obvious tourist, you should be fine. Do watch how you dress, and keep your eyes open. Basically take the same precautions you would in any big city. Rome has tons of buses/trams/trains/subway, or you can walk easily between the major attractions. Number one piece of advice: don't let yourself have more than one drink-alcohol makes you do stupid things you will regret and makes you an easy target.

as safe as anywhere - except baghdad and leeds.

the one and only robertc1985
hey, this is not a relationship offer, but i'd offer to be a bodygaurd if you wanted. if i can make it through compton, then rome will be too easy!

L
its perfectly safe. as with any city, just be careful of theft.

most of sites can be easily accessed on foot. there is a tour bus you can hop on/off of if walking gets too much.

theres plenty of places to eat

fantastic city. have a great trip

I'd say make sure that you don't walk around alone at night, and also make sure that you be careful about crowded areas where pickpockets might be. Generally speaking I think Rome is a safe place, but be careful. Also, use the clean and reliable transportation instead of going with the cheapest stuff.

As for eating, I think you should check the US embassies advice about eating, but I think eating over there is sanitary.

Hope you have a great trip.

Rome is as safe as anywhere as long as you are careful. It is an amazing city and you can get to almost anywhere on foot - very tireing though! the only place that i would be a little cautious around is termini - the central station - its not the most salubrious neighbourhood! As for food, worry not it is all ace!

Puppy
Yesssssss...and dont worry italian men are not cave people....they just like women but if you dont appreciate that....they will go elsewhere! Plenty of choise. Bye and enjoy your stay

two young girls alone in Italy are fair bait... I did it in 1975....to avoid problems, adopt the first decent looking guy who approaches you as a chaperone...Italians are so macho, they will leave you alone if you're with another man. Enjoy your trip. Italy is a great country, to eat cheaply, try trattorias..

yes....but...attention...

Advice - Italian men will give you a lot of attention, tourists probably won't. Italian men are...predatory and unreconstructed, largely. Just be careful...don't get yourselves into compromising situations.
