If you look at a map of Italy, Sicily is what looks like a football at the bottom of the boot (Italy looking like a large boot). Sicily, in other words, is at the South Western tip of mainland Italy. Sicily, which is actually quite close to the Northern coast of Africa and it is in the center of the Mediterranean Sea.

Simple answer, yes.

Sicily is a semi-autonomous region of Italy. See this link for a great deal of info on Sicily.

Aren't you glad you fixed your spelling? Sicily has its own governor. You never have to leave the train traveling from the mainland to Messina Sicily. How neat!
Now the story. Sicily in the past felt the government was neglecting the Sicilians, not protecting them. They formed their own government, The Mafia(loose translation...my daughter).
Check out this TV movie.. Excellent Cadavers (1999) .... with Chazz Palminteri as Giovanni Falcone...story of organized crime fought in Italy and Sicily
