Is southern Italy really that dirty?

When I picture Italy, I think of Roman Holiday :) but I was looking at some comments from an i-report(CNN) and they were saying that Naples has garbage-lined streets. Is it that way for all of Naples or just a section? What about other Southern Italy cities? Same thing?

There are some parts of Naples that just are not well kept- not unlike some parts of American cities. I am pretty fearless when it comes to traveling in strange places and I did walk down the "wrong" neighborhood street in Naples once and got a distinct feeling that I needed to find my way out of there at once.

But on the other hand, the main shopping streets of Naples where many people were walking, talking, eating etc, was very normal and safe. Always watch your personal belongings of course.

just Naples...and all the region Campania.

Garbage on the streets is a problem limited to the Naples area and a few places in Campania. All the rest of southern Italy is OK, both north and south!

Italy isn't dirty. ^__^

My nonna is from the Campania region and it is beautiful. She sends cards all the time. It is an older region, but by far the most enchanting. The architecture, the coast line, the natural wonders. Pompeii. And Sicily is gorgeous as well although not in the same area, here are some site links,

Don't believe everything you here on tv. In some areas of Paris, there is garbage in the streets and the Seine River is waste water, but tourists still think it is the most beautiful city in the world. Not true, but they think it. Have fun on your trip!!

its hot and poor what do you think... lol just kiddin

i dunno Sicily is beautiful and so is Rome...other than that i dunno

id say its clean enuf.... how bad cud it be?

italy is clean, the garbage is only in Naples and Naples's area. no problem if u go in turin, milan, verona, venice, rome, tuscany, sicily, sardinia, all italy but naples's area.
the problem of garbage appertains of the municipality of naples, so it's impossible there are garbage problems out of naples's area

No, not at all. I was in Capri island, Sorrento, Sicily and there was less dirt than in some parts of Paris.

Just a section. Southern Italy is awesome. Where you will be going (touristy) you won't see it. Man I had a good time there. make sure you drink lots of wine. Believe or not the white wines are better there and the beaches are to die for. Rent a scooter for a day. Cheapest and best way to park and see everything!!

Some places are (San Vito de Normani), but most are just "well used".

Naples is pretty gross... stick to Roma, Firenze, Sorrento etc.

No,of course not! It´s only a moment!Italy is wonderful,it´s a developed country, very rich, clean. The north is better than the south, but the south is like Greece.
It´s not for all of Naples,it´s just a section.Naples is very beautiful, and it ´s only a moment.Italy is beautiful, from the south to the north, but I prefer the north.

i'm from Naples,
perchè ca22o parlate se non ci state qua e non sapete le cose!!!

garbage there's only in some section, and not in tourists areas. only during the top of the crisis, could be a lot for 2-3days.
south italy is very beautiful, the best part of italy.
best beaches and sea, sun all year long, food, slow way of life, great places and nature, for a vacation... it's the best place of the world.
just be careful a while in Naples in the streets, and have fun =)

Citizen Know Nothing
I wouldn't go any further south than Rome
if you go to Italy
the best part of the country is in the north
