Is there a nice hotel near the airport in Palermo, Italy? I would also like tips on where to stay other places

We are spending 10 days in Sicily and have never been there before. We want to see everything (of course!) and I would like tips from those who have been there before. Thanks!

Hi there,

Great question. And very smart of you to ask. My whole family lives in Palermo, Sicily and I hav e been many many times. Additionally you can always talk to your local Triple AAA office or go to www.aaa.com. The airport in Palermo is called Punta Raisi. It is located in the middle of a volcanic mountain side and is a beutiful scene coming in. You are going to Italy in the best time of the year. the prices are lower, the water on the beaches is still very warm and the food is spectaculer. I am partial to tell you that the People in Southern Italy are much nicer and more cordial then in Northern Italia. The fare of food tastes we call Italian food in the USA was introduced and made populer by Southern Italian dishes. Keep in mind all menu items are "ala carte" tehre are no combinations and please order accordinglly as portions tend to be big in some establishments.

There is a large train station in Palermo called Piazza Centrale. It is in the center of the city and is accessible via taxi or local busses. I recommend you do all money exchanges when you arrive in Italy. You will more then likely be flying into Rome or Milan. Do the money exchanges at the airport from a reliable name such as "Thomas Exchange" or "Banco Italia". You will get much better rates and fees are a little cheaper.

To answer your question on hotels in Palermo. The Holiday Inn near Palermo is actually a very nice establishment. Tehre are also a number of small mom and pop hostiles or family owned villas for rent. It all depends on your budget.

Make sure to see the beautiful churches, the beaches. the Sicilian ruins and take lots of pictures..

One more bit of advice.. Learn enough Italian to get by and not seem rude. If you attempt to speak the language the Italian people they will open up to you. Once they relieze that you are American they will more then likely open up to you more since we are suppossedly "the rich country"!

I hope this helps.. any questions send me an instant message on my yahoo account. "ITALIAJP"
