It's a magical city and October is one of the best months to visit. I've been in and around Venice for many years and can tell you that you'll either hate it or love it. There is no in between.
People will tell you that it's dirty, chuck full of tourists, the canals smell and the food (in most of the restaurants) is awful and over priced. It's a difficult city to live in because you have carry your groceries, avoid the dog poo and don't look up with your mouth open or a pigeon will shìt in it. Everyone leaves their garbage out in the mornings and the sea gulls (and cats and dogs) tear at the bags and spew garbage every where. Rats... the city has a real problem. And there are glass and mask shops everywhere! This is all true. I’ve seen it and have lived it.
BUT I LOVE IT.... with all of its faults it's a refuge from the modern world. It could be a dangerous place to live for once you get accustomed to it you may never want to leave.... It is a little shocking to leave if you’ve been there for several weeks because outside of the city modern urban life seems shocking and dull. Venice has got great museums, a world class opera house, several theaters, great bars, you can find some decent food still, the Rialto market is just great, small theater performances, boating and an entire lagoon to discover. Need i say more?

I dont live there but would like to.its magical...been many times and there is no place like it.........

It's so far from any other experience then live in any other place is hard for Venetians (at least at the beginning). We are use to walk in every season, everyday, also with luggage or toddlers and shopping bags, don't have cars, friends and relatives few steps from home, knowing well all the people and shops around.

Yes, Venice Italy. It's warm but cloudy today
