Wi-Fi is available in a lot of places. The hotel I stayed in in Bologna on Friday had Wi-Fi and I know of some in Verona that have free WiFi. There are connection points in airports and some other locations. It's not so common to have coffee shops or bookstores here that provide them.

In addition to the Wi-Fi hot spots, there are many internet providers especially in the big tourist cities. Many hotels either have wifi or provide wired in-room internet connections. In Firenze, there's one in the shopping area under the train station and several in the city. In Venice, they're all over the place if you look closely. There are a couple within a few blocks of the train station if you head toward Rialto/San Marco.

Here are some sites where you can find hot spot locations in Italy:

http://www.jiwire.com/browse-hotspot-italy-it.htm (currently lists 5047 hot spots)

It's not hard at all. There are Internet Cafes all over the place. They a MUCH more common in Europe than in the US.

I found the exact opposite. They are accessible in weird places like the Laundry in Rome. None of the hotels (although they were all 3 star) had wi-fi. But they all had internet. Expect to pay a premium for it though.
