Is traveling to Venice in late Nov or early Dec a good time to visit? |
I heard there is sometimes flooding at this time of the year and it might not be very lively. But I also think it might be nice around the holidays. |

It's not the best time, but it's usually not bad. I live a couple of hours from Venice and usually make a couple of trips during December. There's a nice, small Christmas market in Campo San Stefano. Actually, I usually hope there will be some flooding - it makes for interesting pictures. Basically, when it floods, they put out raised walkways to get around and many of the hotels have boots available for guests. The high water is usually for a matter of hours and you can visit the museums and shops in the higher areas until the tide goes out. Rather this is a problem or not depends a lot on your attitude. It's likely to be pretty cold and may be foggy - to me, the fog adds more atmosphere, but then I'm only two hours away and don't have a specific tourist itenerary when I go. Don't expect to eat at a canalside table, but do expect to be able to see all the normal tourist places.
One advantage of December is that there are not huge crowds, so it's easy to get around and see the city when it's not flooded. My daughter visited during Thanksgiving a few years ago. When we went to Venice on Wednesday, there was pretty high flooding and snow so we went into an exibit at Palazzo Grasso. When we came out a couple of hours later, the flooding had receeded so we wnet to Quadry in Piazza San Marco for lunch - it was a lot of fun. The next day in Florence, the temperatures were in the mid 70s. The weather here is a lot like Denver with humidity. |

Hi,
If I were you I would definetely go. Yes, it may flood but it won't last for days!!! And, even though it might be a bit more difficult to visit the city, it will be an unforgettable sight and experience! As for the "lively" bit, bear in mind that there will still be tourists around (less than in summer, though) so you won't feel isolated during the day! In the winter evenings Venice is not the most lively city but walking there by night is one of the most romantic things you can do!
Do not expect lots of tacky lights everywhere for Christmas. Everything is toned-down compared to some other major European or American cities but still very very nice. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Hope this helps |

I suggest that you wrap up warm if going in November, its getting quite cool by then, and perhaps not quite so busy, but if you are thinking of going at Christmas i would say book somewhere soon. |

I went to venice early september and it was beautiful, the film festival was on and the regatta so plenty to see. But i've heard others say they hated it and they all happen to have gone when theres flooding so personally i wouldnt risk it. Save your wonderful experience till spring at earliest. |

It is hit and miss.
Miss as you already know. It will be rainy with flooding and chilly.
Hit - still chilly, but no rain, no crowds, everything to yourself.
Hard call. If it were only chilly and rainy I would do it (Venice is gorgeous no matter what), but you can't get around the flooding. |

Go for it, my girlfriend and I went for mid November till just before Thanksgiving. Weather was cold but bearable, no crowds at all. Some people say it smells bad in Venice during warmer months. We loved Venice and would go back again, after Venice we travelled to Verona, Florance, Medina, Sienna, Multipulciano, and Rome |
