There is actually never a bad season to visit Venice. The worst months though are July & August for it is too hot and there are too many tourists. You shouldn't find the city all that crowded when you plan to be there, especially after the New Year.
December / January - you could have cool to cold sunny days as you can misty damp and miserable days. You could even have high water...
Just make sure you have a water proof coat and remember to dress in layers. Also remember that you'll be walking all day and so you'll heat up walking and then cool down when you stop for breaks.
I Googled mapped your hotel and see that are nearly 7 miles from Piazzale Roma. There is only one bus you can take (back & forth) and it's the Number 6. Unfortunately it doesn't drop you off very close to the hotel You'll have about a 300 yard walk. Fortunately the bus runs regularly. The bus costs about €1.50... while the taxt could run you as high as about €20.00 each way.

Things to do in Venice - walk and try your best to get lost. make you sure you have your cameras and plenly of memory. Take a sketch book and or a journal with you too.
One of my favorite places to eat is called the Taverna San Trovaso - prices are good and the food even better. It's close to the Accademia and not all that far from the Guggenheim.
A great place for a properly made Martini or just a glass of wine if the Bar Accademia just at the foot of the bridge. They even make pizza (though I've never tried them) and good "tramezzini" or small triangle shapped sandwiches.
You'll find the city pretty much open for business.
Oh, one last thing... You may want to go to a super market to pick up a bottle of wine or some good Italian ham to take back to the hotel for a late night snack. Try the Billa supre market. There is one next to the San Basiglio vaporetto stop on the Zattere and one along Strada Nuova as you leave the Train Station and walk torwards Rialto. You'll find a very good selection of wines and a good deli counter.

SEC accurately told you most of what you want to know. I live about two hours from Venice and like to spend time there in December - January. It can be pretty cold, but that just makes the vin brule better. You should be aware that average prices for restaurants in Venice would be considered high in a lot of places. Check the menus as you're wandering around to fine something in your budget. One place I particularly like is La Zucca - especially the pumpkin dishes http://www.lazucca.it/ita/index.asp?L=2. Cantinone Storico near Accademia is another good choice.

Hi!! I'm italian and I live in Mestre!! In my opinion winter is the best time to come to Venice because there are less tourists... All the museums, restaurants shops ecc are open in every season!!
The weather changes from a year to another so I can't tell you if this winter will be bad or not... Usually it's cold (about 0°C) ad often there is a strong fog... Sometime there is "acqua alta" "high water" but it is a beautiful and characteristic event for a tourist...
There are a lot of buses, you won't have problems... The taxis are very expensive...
About reastaurant I can't tell you anything because I don't eat very often in Venice!!!
Bye bye!!
Sorry for my bad bad bad English!!
