Italian cell phone - I'm looking for a cheap, but good, cell phone.?

I'm in Italy for 3 years to study. I need a cell phone mainly for SMS, to make brief calls, and to accept brief and lengthy calls from the US and Italy. I just want a phone that works anywhere and everywhere, has good battery life, and isn't too expensive. I'd like to go with either TIM or Vodafone - not Wind (it doesn't have signal lots of places). My Italian isn't so good, and so the webpages for these companies are a little confusing for me. I just need help picking a cheap phone, cheap plan. Help! Thanks a lot!
Additional Details
I send a lot of SMS within Italy, rarely outside. But, I do receive calls from outside Italy on a regular basis. These are usually long phonecalls. I make some brief phonecalls, but only in Italy. I know I do not want Wind. I've had several friends who were unhappy with the service they received - no signal in a lot of areas, etc.

You don't need to buy a cell phone tied to a specific company; you can choose a "free" phone, so you have a lot of choices, then buyng a sim card (Vodafone, TIM, Wind, whatever), starting from 5 €.
Yuo can find sim cards everywere.
Personally, I'll take a look at this web site
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AiA3nZ71ieXWuTfj2Ctv8Myu7RR.?link=answer&.crumb=7JAj8MuJ16n&qid=20070513100100AAtLZEE&.done=http%253A%252F%252Fanswers.yahoo.com%252Fquestion%252Findex%253Fqid%253D20070513100100AAtLZEE

even if you don't want to buy there, their price are usually the lower, so you can compare with the ones from other shops.

As for brand, the most appreciated are Samsung and SonyEricsson are the most appreciated by Italian users; good choice LG, while Alcatel is known because of best "signal-catching" ability and capacity of the battery.
Sagem are nice, if you find one at a low price.

If you want a cell phone to work "everywhere" meaning outside Europe, be sure it's a tri or quadri band.

On TIM shop web page (Vodafone is currnelty off-line) I can suggest you, if you're looking for a tri-band, Samsung SGH-D410 (69 €) or Sony Ericsson K300i (89 €), both woth a TIM sim card and no charge for shipping.

Anyway, if you often receive long phone call, for battery Alcatel is your first choice.

I think Wind is the better choice, the coverage area is good and wind has also the cheapest plan to send sms, especially abroad, anyway if you just don`t want wind please give me more detail about your need (ex. short phone call, long phone call).
