Italian men and female tourists?

I'm going to Rome in a few weeks time and our italian teacher told us not to wear skirts. Aparently, he says, Italian men hit a lot on tourist girls. A friend of mine who went there a few years ago said the same thing. I thought it was just an old misconception, but is it true?

Yes, Italian men indeed hit a lot on tourist girls. However, not wearing skirts is really too much. I am Italian and I live in Rome, so trust me; it is true that many of us harass young and pretty foreigners; some guys can be annoying, while some just want to have a laugh; yet this doesn't mean that we are all pervs! I for one never do so; be careful not to immediately judge as a maniac someone who starts talking with you. Some of us are genuinely interested in foreign cultures. Remember that nobody will harm you or so; we are a civilized nation. Just be careful not to wear something too sexy and ALWAYS turn down guys who try to hook you up. Anyway, don't be worried, you will have no problems. Just accept the fact that almost certainly a guy or two will have a shot trying to seduce you, but they won't insist too much if you show no interest in them. Have a nice holiday and enjoy visiting Rome, which is an extremely beautiful city. Bye.

I think that European men are very "flirty" but mostly harmless. When I went, my daughter was flirted with (with jeans on), but never inappropriately. They are very open and friendly whic can be perceived as agressive. Stay with your group and you'll feel comfortable. The problem your teacher may be referring to is that American clothing styles for teenagers are very tight, and they are low in front and short on the bottom. Longer skirts should be fine, but don't wear shorts or no-sleeve shirts because you will be going in and out of a lot of churches and you may offend the Italians. Have fun!
