try to learn some italian! here there's very few peolple who can speak english...try our dishes, our fish and pasta disesh, maybe you heard about lasagne, but the choice in italy is enormous. chose a cuple of cities and then give a look at the sea and the hills or mountains...I'd chose tuscany hills, sicily's sea and...don't know maybe rome, florence, bologna, venice! it's a hard decision, let us know.

As an American who spends 1/2 the year there, learn some Italian! When I first came for a visit, I knew enough for basic pleasantries and ordering food - making an effort to speak Italian goes a long way here.

The trains - here is the trick: when you're at a major station the track number will change a couple times. Stay near the "head" of the station till about 10 minutes prior to your train leaving then go to the track the board shows. This sounds nuts, but it's true.

In restaurants, be prepared to pay a cover charge - which will be (generally) on the menu. Generally a couple euro's. You can counter this by grabbing a sandwich or slice at a counter where you can stand or hitting a market and eating in view of your favorite site.

If you're American, don't expect customer service. if something goes wrong at a hotel/restaurant/etc the most you'll get is an apology. So annoying when you see Americans who expect free things for inconveniences.

Check with where you are staying to 'reserve' times to go to museums - the extra couple euros you'll spend to get in will be worth the time you would otherwise spend in line.

Talk to strangers, watch out for gypsies (esp near tourist areas) and enjoy!

Don't be the classic american.. always thinking you're the best and demanding, arrogant.

Leave your shorts and flip flops at home or for beach towns.
Don't be afraid to try real food.... not mcdonals...try to speak Italian... show that you care about our culture, and don't look at it as wierd! USE THE BIDET!
These tips should get you through just fine!

Hello, I am Italian and I live in Rome, you can say it is wonderful and it's worth a visit him. Public transport available are: Metro (2 lines: A and B) and bus tram. The city is surrounded by a highway call GRA (Ring Road), where there are 36 outings, this was designed to promote the flow of circulation traffic and achieve the desired place more quickly. The monutmenti most famous are: the Coliseum (a Roman Amphitheater), the famous Fountain of Trevi where you can throw money and express a desire, Phanteon, the stairs of the square in spain and many more! Via condotti. This street is famous for its botiques of prestige brands (Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Woolrich, MontBlanc ...) and many others! As a city you can not say that prices are very high and live well! If you can come down in Rome at the International Airport Leonardo Da Vinci (Romany we call the Fiumicino airport, because that's where locality, which is located 20 kilometers from Rome). For the food you assure them they will get very very happy ... but we eat well ... Pizza, Abbacchio to Romanesca and many other delicacies! We look! :)))

Sorry for my English ... do not speak very well !!

i'm italian

1-first of all don't wear those stupid hawaiian shirts and unfashion shorts
2- don't try to speak in italian,if you don't know the right italian pronunciation, i think that some americans are very ridicolous speaking italian language, speak english is better.
3- try to eat the original italian food, that is completely different from the american italian cuisine
4- don't visit the typical turistic monuments as colosseum, venice, pisa, etc, you have to have originality, go to visit new less turistic areas, more genuine
5- respect some strict rules, as the prohibition of smoke in all public buildings, etc
6- you aren't obliged to pay tip for restaurants, taxi, hotel, bar, etc
