Spend at least 4 days in Rome
You can do Venice in a day, or two max (you shouldn't miss it, but it's small and everything can be done within 1-2 days)
You must go to Florence (Firenze) - it's gorgeous. Also, if you can make a stop in Bologna, I think you wouldn't be disappointed either (both cities can be done for 3 days each).

Went to Italy for 3 weeks w/ my wife.

Spend about 4-5 days in Rome.

Spend about 3 in Venice.

Then move on to other places! Take the train. It's fun and exciting.

It could depend on the person too because if u don't like the cold rome would the perfect place to start, the ancient cities of rome will take you about 3-4 to go around i surely suggest you stay hotel viennese is not expensive and surely comfortable and pleasant. heading to Venice u should take a train from Rome to Milan (also very cheap), from there taxi would be better to get to venice borders, i wouldn't recommend renting if your trying to save some money, because gas prices in italy are a bit expensive around (40 to 50 for a tank full)
I would spend only about 2 days in Venice since its pretty small, u should be able to see the whole in a short time. im italian from italy trieste, so i know all of this.

ps. you should go on the gondoliers in venice their a wonderful experience

doctor
not much. go to the north italy, bozen , meran to get the x-mas spirit also milano is very good

If you want to visit them in the best way, I suggest you to spend the most of time in Rome and to enjoy the end of the year and the last days in Venice. It's better to don't visit too many cities in such a short time or you'd miss a lot of things, cause there's much more than the usual 4-5 monuments that they shows on TV usually.

u can visit Venice in one day..anyway i think u've got to stay there for 2-3 days..
to Rome u should spend about 4 days..

i'm italian..why don't u come in MILAN??dont' u like this beautiful city???

Having visited both Venice and Rome, I think you will find much to interest you in both places. Venice is often overcrowded, simply due to the smaller space it occupies- still it's very worthy of a good look around. Venice and the surrounding islands, Burano and Murano will keep your interest and you should allow yourself at least 3-4 days to explore.Rome is a beautiful ancient city, filled with historical sites, beautiful fountains, and history everywhere you look. There is also an abundance of designer shops to wander in and out of, plenty of gelato to be had, and many piazzas to sit and drink a glass of wine while you watch the tourists and locals all about you. Rome has many treasures to be found, but time is needed to see even a portion of them. I would suggest a stay of at least 7-10 days. No matter where you are in Italy, you will find yourself wonderfully transported into a different way of looking at life, into the passion of now... andiamo!

You're gonna have such a great time. Spend at least 5 days in Rome. And 5 in Venice. And please don't miss Florence - because it really is gorgeous and you would regret missing it. My two pennies:
Rome:
You can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com Switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Rome) and leave the address field blank. Then click on "Search hotel". I went to Hotel Le Petit, this hotel is the perfect location for sightseeing. It's a safe website I've used many times so far, and you can book on line.
Venice:
Same url than above http://www.scoobit.com then fill the form with city name (Venice) you can leave the address field blank. Then click on "Search hotel". I went to MBest Western Hotel Olimpia Venezia, it was OK, but feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs.
Florence:
Near center is the best choice for sightseeing and night life. You can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com Switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Florence) and leave the address field blank. Then click on "Search hotel". I went to MSNHotel Bigallo, nice and clean place, loving it. Scroll down and look on the right. But feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. You're gonna love Florence. It's such a beautiful city and there's so much to see.

You can visit Venice in 3-4 days.. It's not so a big city ! ( Very is nice but I think very damp and expensive!!!)
Rome is a Fantastic city!!! Bigger than Venice and I advice you to stay there the most of the time !! Thare are a lot of monuments and attractions !
I'm from Italy and I would stay there for New Years !!
Have a good time !

You could also visit the north of Italy like Trentino Alto Adige ..
There are very nice X-mas markets ( in Bolzano, or in Austria- Innsbruck !! )

I'm assuming you will be flying in and out of Rome. My idea of such a trip would be to use Rome and Florence as home bases to explore neighboring cities - You get to see a lot of the city without a lot of packing and unpacking.

Day 1: (Take Train to Florence)
Day 2: Florence
Day 3: Florence / Assisi
Day 4: Florence / San Gimignano
Day 5: Florence / Siena
Day 6: Florence / Pisa & Lucca
Day 7: Venice
Day 8: Venice
Day 9: Venice
Day 10: Venice
Day 11: Rome
Day 12: Rome
Day 13: Rome / Orvieto
Day 14: Rome / Sorrento
Day 15: Rome
