Here is my check-off list of things you must see in those two cities:
Venice
. St. Marks Basilica / Square
. Doge's Palace
. Rialto Bridge
. Murano glass manufacturing
. Burano
. Lido
Rome
. Vatican
. Coliseum
. The Forum
. Spanish Steps
. Pantheon
. The Borghese Museum
. Gianicolo
. Piazza Navona
. Trevi Fountain
As far as Christmas gifts first on my list is Italian coffee. The place I go to is right by the Pantheon. It's called Tazza d'Oro. Coffee prices there are quite reasonable and it's the best in the world. I bring back 1/4 kilo packages for myself and little sample bags for my buddies at work.
For leather, Florence is the place to go. It's in-between Rome and Venice and it's a great place to visit if you can swing it. In 2002 I bought leather dress shoes for 20 euros that I like better than my Ferragamos. I was there this spring and unfortunately, I couldn't find any deals like that. Regardless, there are many leather stores in Florence and if you know what a good price is for what you are looking for you should be able to find a good deal.
Venice is famous for decorative masks. |

Venice is one of the most famous italian cities... It's nice and very romantic... But not in winter. Venice is beautifull on summer...
Rome... Rome is the most beautifull italian city, summer, winter, always.
But I think that if you want to find something magic, go to the north.
There's a lot of snow, a magic landscape. Not only for skiing!
Valle D'Aosta, Lombardia... Milan, Brescia, Livigno, Cortina D'Ampezzo...
If you wanna do a nice Christmas shopping go to Bolzano or Trento... |

If your husband is based on Vicenza, you can easily go to Christmas market in Trentino, Bolzano or Merano. Look at this:

When you go to Venice, the best souvenirs are the Glass Beads and necklaces. Just make sure you get real Murano ones or that not totally authentic! |

Basically, you should be able to handle all the major tourist attractions in either city. My favorite places in Rome are the Pantheon and several of the fountains.
The Christmas markets are open - I was in Bolzano and Trento on Saturday. They have lots of sweaters, ornaments, crafts, and food. You won't find leather at the markets, but both towns have nice pedestrian shopping areas where there are stores that do carry leather. A good place to look for leather is in Florence - you could stop over on the way to Rome. There's a small, but nice Christmas market in Campo San Stefano in Venice.
Verona is a nice place to visit in December. In addition to all the normal attractions, there is a huge exhibition of presepi (nativity scenes) from around the world in the old Roman colosseum there (l'Arena). Verona is also a great place to shop.
As for souvenirs, it depends on your taste. Venice is known for carnevale masks, murano glass and lace from Burano. The bigger towns have several artists in the tourist areas selling paintings - some of them are quite good. In Venice there are a lot of them on the waterfront near Piazza San Marco. In Rome, there are some good ones on the bridge in front of Castel Sant'Angelo. Rome also has an exhibit of 100 presepi in Piazza del Popolo. The Christmas and nativity scene at the Vatican are usually pretty nice. You'll be able to find leather goods on Via Veneto along with other places in Rome. |
