Italy Visiting rome, trip to Florence?

It's a bit far to go for a day, and Florence could use a week of its own really. Why not try a day trip to somewhere else down south like Pompeii?

I am also going to Rome in August I am going to be there for about 13 days and am def taking a train to Florence and Venice and wat ever else i have time for...!!!

stay in rome, take it easy. florence is great, but the train trip from rome is two hours, a pretty hectic day trip. you'll love italy, save florence for your next trip. good luck, have fun. ciao!

I was a little disapointed with florence to be honest. After all the hype and talk of 'Stendhalism' (falling ill from being overwhelmed by the city's beauty!) it just seemed to me like any other town-all beit one with incredible collections of art. If you like art, then it's definitely worth going to, but if you just want to wander around an relax it's probably not worth the extra effort.

Venice on the other hand IS a mindblowing place!

i live here in florence, if i were you, i would catch a train early morning at 4 or 5 am from rome, one of those cheap trains that stop in every stop and takes the longest route, catch it and sleep all the way until i get to florence around 9 or 10. spend the entire day there in florence (one day wouldnt give you enought time to visit the museums, but enough time to see the entire city, (its extremly small compared to rome) see the entire town,visit all the churches, skip all the museums because they are going to use up all of your time, unless your a museum lover, and take the latest train back to rome the same day.

ive done that to venice, to save up money and not have to find hotel there but spend the entire day there. the only thing i want to warn you is, BE careful when you go one of these late trains, im not saying you might get killed, nothing of that sort! just want to warn you on the pickpocketing, the thing is, believe or not, these late trains sometimes are packed! and makes it easy for one to pick pocket another. one time i was in one of them, it was all crowded, 1:30 am departing from florence to rome and all of a sudden a lady began screaming that someone had stolen her purse...thats the type of stuff you should be aware of!

even if you take the Eurostar, (the most expensive train, goes fast and is clean and elegant) people still get robbed. the thing is, when you go in that train, you leave your luggeage at the entrance of each train cart next to the door, so while you go and sit in your distant seat with your back on it, when the train stops either someone by the door gets it before you even get up on purpose and takes off. it has happend to one of my friends, and its a horrible thing. so be careful!!

Yes Florence is always worth a visit.You can get trains easily from Rome and the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence is very handy for the city centre. It takes a little over two hours to get there.

We went to Italy at the end of May. We spent a couple of days on each of Florence, Venice and Rome, and that was enough.... unless you are a true art lover.

Florence disappointed us too - the Uffizi gallery has an incredible collection of art, but the city itself was a bit of a grubby, busy industrial city.

The trains are excellent though. If you get up early and plan for a full day, you could get a train from Rome to Florence and then from there to Pisa in the same day (Florence to Pisa is one hour and 5 euros each way!). Pisa is small enough to walk to the Leaning Tower from the railway station and back, so you don't need more than a few hours there, even if you want to queue to go up the tower.

But if you do like art, you could spend the whole day in the Uffizi in Florence, and 'do' Pisa on a different day. We may sound like Americans, but we felt that we saw enough of Rome in two days, even if we did do quite a lot of walking.... but you do have to take at least one taxi in Rome, as it's an amazing experience!

If you will never be back in Italy, then YES go to Florence AND Venice. There are fast trains at a reasonable price.
If you expect to return to Italy, then let this 5 day trip be your Rome one.

I DEFINATELY WOULD GO TO FLORENCE!! I went Rome for 2 weeks in January and I did both Florence AND Pisa in ONE DAY - I got to both cities from Rome and back to Rome in the same day!!

I NEVER took a tour! You can do it!! It is worth it to go see the Michaelangelo's "DAVID" at the Galleria and the "Leaning Tower" in Pisa - plus there are neat churches and a neat cemetary in Pisa too that I saw.

Venice is A BEAUTIFUL CITY too (I would go to see it if you have time). However, be prepared for "THE SMELL" - which is terrible!! All the sewage goes into the canals. I was there an entire day and I could still smell it a bit.
