For a holiday, it's great to base yourself in Florence then see the rest of Tuscany from there.
Florence itself is a breathtaking city with so much to see. Il Doumo alone makes the visit worth it.
It's also served by an excellent train service and travel to other areas of Tuscany is cheap and fast.
Siena makes for an incredible day trip and Lucca is a hidden gem. Such a beautiful, tranquil town, surrounded by the old walls that you can walk round and take in great views. Both of these places are only just over an hour away from Florence by train and can easily be visited in a day.
Arezzo is also lovely - if you've seen the film Life Is Beautiful, that's where it was filmed.

To live? If you are rich is good to live everywhere in Italy....specially where is less cold in winter...possibly nearby the coast..
to visit? I would advise you to avoid the tourists tracks and see something different like Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata,Calabria....you won't regret

If you really want to SEE Italy, avoid the beaten path. Of course visit Rome, la citta eterna. Although it obviously has its main tourist points (which you don't want to miss) like the collosseum, the forum, palentine hill, the vatican, st. peters basilica, etc. there is a lot more to Rome. I reccommend staying somewhere near the Campo de Fiori. It is a popular local hang out, especially at night, and is filled with lovely little cafes and bars. It is also a very convenient location. Piazza Navona (which is beautiful) is just across the main street, the tiber river is also very close, and the trevi fountains, pantheon, spanish steps, and more are all within walking distance.
Besides Rome, I recommend visiting Siena. It is absolutely amazing. I stayed in a convent there, and while that might not sound too appealing, it's not what you'd think. Each room has a balcony that overlooks the valley of houses that Siena is famous for. It's also within walking distance of the Piazza del Campo, which is one of Italy's largest piazzas.
Venice is very beautiful, but again, avoid the beaten path. Venice is very tourist-crowded and expensive. Look for smaller hotels and local restaurants. But don't forget to visit attractions like Piazza San Marco, San Marco Basilica, Palazzo Doges, and the Rialto Bridge.
While most people are slightly scared of the place, I also recommend taking a day-trip into Naples from Rome. Naples is the epitomy of Italian culture, and is not dangerous as long as you don't set yourself up to be pick-pocketted or mugged. (Leave money out of plain sight). Also from Naples you can take a train to Pompeii and Herculaneum, which is another must-see.
The Cinque Terre is also an extremely beautiful coastal area in northern Italy which is made up of five different beach towns. I recommend Vernazza. It has it's own little beach and cliffs perfect for diving and fishing if you like that. It is very unique but takes quite a drive to get there. Also, cars are off limits inside the town so you will have to take a shuttle from the parking lot into town.
Hope all this was helpful!

To visit:

Rome (of course)
Florence
Venice
Pisa
Milan
Naples
Palermo

To stay, I would ABSOLUTELY head for someplace in rural Tuscany! (maybe because of the movie, but that has long been a dream...to live in Tuscany for a while)
