Italy is??

My heritage is Italian. My great grandparents came on a boat many years ago and passed before I could get a chance to ask how the country was.

Anyway, I plan on making a trip sometime to the homeland, and Im just wondering if anyone knows how much a trip to Italy will run me, and where the most historical places are to visit.

Thanks!

Unless you're going for more than 6 monthes don't even attempt to see it all!!!! Florence is nice but like disney land in summer, Venice ditto(but u gotta see it). rome isn't quite as busy as these 2 in summer but its better in spring. For beaches try Puglia, sicily , sardinia, or liguria. It depends what u want from ur holiday. Milan is great for shopping, but the surrounding area is dull. Val d'aosta in the alps is beautiful, but is someway from the coast. For the authentic italian experiance u cud work as an olive picker in Tuscany, or learn to cook pretty much anywhere. Cities such as Lecce and Verona are beautiful and not nearly as crowded as Rome etc. Food is fantastic(esp the fresh veg) and cheap. Hotels and villas less so,but it depends on the time of year. Italy is well connected with a cheap and efficient rail service and a good road system. My favorite area is lake como a beautiful lake where water and mountains meet.

Do you know where in Italy your ancestors are from??.. It would be nice if you go to Rome And Florence and maybe visit the city or town that they were from don“t you think??
Depending on that then you can check out prices. Try to find information....

Take care..

The probability is that your great grandparents came from the south or Sicily . Touristically these are not the best places to go .
I recommend you not to try to see all of Italy in one go . If you're seeking a summer holiday , there may not yet be any flight-bargains around ; but the weather will be faily fine until October . I particularly recommend Tuscany and Florence . If you stay outside the city it will cost you less and there are some inexpensive B&Bs . Out of season is better for seeing famous Galleries like the Uffizzi , but you can also book in advance to avoid a long wait in a queue . There are many things of interest to see in Tuscany , probably the most varied and beautiful part of Italy . Now having embraced the Euro currency , Italy is not any more the cheap place to holiday that it used to be . If you are outside the city there are buses that will take you most places and not too expensive . Usually nowadays you can book a hire-car with your flight at not too great a cost . The station at Florence has a tourist accommodation bureau , that can find you pensioni and B&B at very reasonable prices .
