Considering that you have a seven months child I would suggest Garda lake, because the water is warmer (Como is a glacial lake, very deep), there are much more beaches and the climate is milder. Furthermore Garda Lake is on the way to Venice, you can catch a train direct to Venice there. There are various boat cruises, small villages all around (don't forget to visit Sirmione and Catullo's vila. Catullo was of the greatest poets of ancient Rome).

Both are amazing...but I think that lake garda is the less far from Venice!

lake como is great. there are ferrari's all over the place

Lake Garda is more relax and closer to Venice. Lake Como is more upscale and expensive. Lake Como is closer to Torino and Milan. Lake Garda is closer to Venice and Verona. Verona and Bergamo are a must if you are in that area. Accomodations near Lake Garda are affordable. If you wouldbe in Italy just this one time, go for Como.. otherwise do Garda now and Como next time.
