Licence to boat on a lake?

I'm taking a trip to Lago di Garda, Italy. Do I need a boating license, how do I go about getting one, and is there one offered in English?

pierluisa
you dont need a licence for small boats.
This is a site for boat rental: http://www.rappydrive.it/
they also have models you don't need a license for

here in AUSTRALIA you need a licence and a fishing one to :~(

David H
I've got a 25 hp boat on Lago Maggiore. I can drive up to 40 hp without a license. Within the European Union I believe the license to drive a boat over 40 hp is valid across countries. A friend just went back to Ireland to do his, but he said the one in the UK is easier (40 multiple choice questions).
