May be going to Venice in October? |
We may be going to Venice in October and, I want to pop the question to my long time girlfriend. If anyone has been, please help me out with ideas on where to go, what to see and so on. Oh, I also want to start learning some basic phrases and such, where can I download some stuff to help me with that, eh? |

I'm Italian and I'd like to suggest you something very romantic to pop the question: Venice in cctober, the sunset, only you and your girlfriend on the tipical Venice rowing boat (named Gondola), a bottle of wine... the Rialto Bridge (the most romantic place in venice)..oh my god... I could die for it.
You can easily ask the hotel consierge to arrange everything for you: italians are very romantic and helpfull. He can book the boat for you (please consider the boat can cost around 70-100 €, but it happens just once in your life!)
Regarding the language, I think that book and dictionaries are not so useful, in Venice many people (almost everybody) speak english (it's a very turistic place) so just relax and enjoy your holiday, you don't need to speak italian.
Ciao and best wishes! |

In my opinion San Marco square is one of the best places where to pop the question. If you like a less crowded place I would then suggest the "punta della Salute" (just behind the Salute Church, it's where the Dorsoduro area ends), or again the Zattere area (always in Dorsoduro area).
About learning basic phrases I suggest you buy one of those pocket size travel language books to bring with you. You will be able to learn few things and have a back up book to open whenever you want, once you will be there. |

Congratulations!!
My husband and I got engaged in Venice. He actually did it on a gondola and I was not expecting it at all because he always says that that is cheesy because so many people do it, so I was shocked.
I think in Italy there is no reason to try and be romantic, the country is in itself romantic. So I don't think you should put too much in to it, maybe just have it handy and when the time feels right do it then. It will be so special...
(If you do do it in San Mark's square beware of the pigeons :)
Good luck!!
It cost up $150 for 40 minutes, but my aunt who was with us that day, took the gondolier aside and told him what my husband was going to do, so instead of being on the bumper to bumper gondola ride, our gondolier veered off and took us through the canals on our own trip. |
