You can avoid the line at the Colosseum ticket office either in the morning or evening by going to the ticket window at the Palatine Hill and buying a combination ticket. The Palatine Hill entrance is past Constantine's arch on the right from the colosseum or there's another near the forum.

You can also buy a ticket on-line at: http://www.tickitaly.com/tickets/colosseum-tickets.php or http://goitaly.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=goitaly&cdn=travel&tm=233&gps=223_363_967_711&f=21&su=p531.31.152.ip_p531.29.420.ip_p284.8.150.ip_&tt=13&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.ticketclic.it/Gb/index.cfm

When you already have a ticket, you can bypass the line at the ticket window and just walk in at the entrance.

in the morning I would say as you want to be able to see it all and appreciate it, if you get a change go with a guide as very little is in english and it is great to have someone explaning it all. Also there is a greta company that hands out flyers outside for tours, they do an hr of the Colleseum, hr of the Forum and hr on Palentine hill, this was simply the best guide I have ever been fortunate to meet, he really made the whole area come alive and I learnt loads, HIGHLY recommended

in the evening the colosseum will be lighted ...in the morning of course daylight -- a different atmosphere....
