Moving to Rome, Italy in a few months?

So my sister is going to italy for college (all 4 years). Now, I need to know what types of things she is going to have to bring- most specifically, clothes. She will be in a tiny apartment with not much space for storage so i need to littlest amount of stuff possible that will still get her by. I understand from the brochures and stuff that she will need designer stuff but if we can not afford it, what would be the best second? Any advice would be great! Thank you!

Don't know what brochures you've looked at but most Italian girls, like their American counterparts, cannot afford designer clothes.

As your sister will be in Italy for four years, it would make sense just bring basic summer and winter clothes, and then buy things as she needs them. Italy has shopping centres and malls, with fashionable clothes available at all prices, so she should be able to find things she can afford.

OMG, been living in Rome for 28 years and never knew talking to Italian guys could kill... I should be then long time dead!! :)
Also, WTF do gypsies have to do with clothes?
The best suggestion I can provide is: tell her to bring anything that makes her feel fine and comfortable, as she will probably have to walk a lot (public transportation is not the top, in Rome), and let her buy the rest here - I don't want to sound rude or like I lack of respect towards other Countries' fashion, but we (Italians) are quite obsessed with clothes and are keen to think foreigners don't have a great taste; tourists in fact are identified at first sight by the way they dress, thus contributing to this stereotype. I suggest her to bring as many jeans as possible ( they're always trendy!) and at least a pair of shoes with high heels, useful in case she goes to a party or a night out. Tank tops are popular too, mini skirts rock, cocktail dresses are more than fine.
Hope it helped!

I understand that even in Rome, they have shops.

They have thrift store over there just like over here. When she gets her boots on ground she should beat feet over to the thrift store and look for some hip clothes to wear and some used furniture.

do not believe that she have to wear designer anything Italians mostly wears dress pants or skirts and bluejeans but please do not wear snickers unless you are going to the Jim Italians always wear shoes.tell your sister that she is real Lucky to live in such a beautiful country

Ok, I was born and raised in Rome. The truth is this: clothing is more expensive, but not necessarily people wear designer clothes. What to bring depends on where exactly in Italy your sister is moving. In some parts of the Country it can get very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. In some places it snows, in other, like Rome, it never does. I would suggest bringing some basic pieces to begin with and then have fun shopping there. I think you can find more unique styles there than here in the U.S. so go for it! If she's moving to Rome I can help you even further, just write to me by e-mail.
Ciao!

Hi there, sounds like your in for a great trip.
Take a look here, there's a guide for people coming to Italy for the first time with some general information you might find useful.

Rome was meant to be seen as a tourist and not to be lived in! Unfortunately, your sister may be about to learn this the hard way. Rome is quaint at first, but there is very little about Roman society that functions, and all the initial things that attracted you to Rome in the 1st place wear very thin after only a short while.

The Italians behave in politics and society like the majority of African countries (I speak from first hand experience - through Engineering I have lived and worked in 2 African countries, Spain, Italy, Germany, Australia and New Zealand). The only resemblance that Italians share with Europeans is that they happen to share the same continent.

Italy (and perhaps parts of Portugal) is the only country in Europe that is actually moving backwards in regards to standards in society and government. Spain, that has came from a much more dire predicament under Franco, is now leaps and bounds ahead of Italy.

The Italians are extremely concerned about looks, while ignoring the most pressing problems of their country. They try to cover all their problems with a layer of beautiful clothes, make-up (or graffiti).
It's simply a sign of insecurity, don't fall into that trap. You know the saying "beauty is only skin deep"? Well it couldn't apply more to Italy.

Nope, Italy and Rome are meant to be seen through the camera lens, while chuckling at the follies and incomprehensible actions of the quaint Italians, and no more, otherwise the joke's on you.

Well just take the basics. If there is anything else she needs she can get it there. Tell her not to talk to young Italian guys and American girls. I heard on the news that can get you killed. But really, tell her that I said to be careful and to wear what you can afford. Don't need to do as the Romans do. Tell her not to be shallow. She will be just fine if she just sets her mind on why she is there. School.

send her with the basic. There is alot of Gypsy's there and they have good cheap stuff. Most of the people that live there has little money and look good from that.
