Moving to Sicily, Mafia problems? |
My mom was friends with a man in the Mafia, and she didn't tell me until a few months ago.
When I was little we would go to his house all the time.
He was a really nice man, and moved here and kept his cover-up job and never liked to talk about it.
But anyway, what I am asking is, I have been planning to move to Sicily and I know how powerful the Mafia is there, so can I live/work there without the Mafia getting in contact? Additional Details You guys take this wrong!
I failed to mention that my grandparents, great-grandparents, and earlier are from Sicily.
I probably should have mentioned that. |

No sweat. You'll be fine. Don't let your imagination and hollywood images get in the way of reality. If you're a wise-guy or a criminal, they don't worry, they'll contact you from Palermo. If you're not a wise-guy or criminal, than they will not contact you. Have a good move. Enjoy. Bon Giorno! |

What the hell are you saying. why should the mafia harm you? just because your mom was a friend of a mafia guy? and if he was really from the mafia why should he have told your mother. real mafia guys are like spies they don't go around saying it... maybe you really saw to many movies. come to italy nobody will touch you. |

Get over yourself. Seriously. Life is not TV.
Just mind your own bussiness, be polite and mind your manners. Dont wear a hooker skirt in church. and you will be fine. |

Sicily is not only mafia and the MAJORITY of sicilians are not mafiosi at all...it would be like if i was afraid going to Usa and scared to meet mass murders outside the schools or people who wear guns all the time...get real Sicily got lots to offer and is a fantastic place plus you will find mafia EVERYWHERE nowadays! |

Sicily is wild and beautiful. Your relatives will tell you if you have anything you need to worry about. But mostly the Sicilians have ceased to put up with the Mafia and have prosecuted and locked up many. It' s not what it used to be for sure. I hope you get to Taormina and the Strait of Messina. My favorites. Also the great Greek ruin sites. |

Maybe you've seen too many times "The Godfather", or too many episodes of "The Sopranos".
I'm sicilian, and I can assure you that if you'll have problems to find a job in Sicily it'll just be because in Sicily there's not a great number of employment possibilities. Of course it depends by what you want to do. If you want to do a "high skilled" job you have some possibilities, but if you want just to do something to earn a bit of money (like batender, waiter or things like these), I guess it'll be really difficult: there aren't jobs enough not even for the locals...
If you'll just go there for tourism... well... believe me: you'll coem back home thinking "I've been really stupid in thinking things like those". Sicilian people will take your heart (not literally, of course!), with their hospitality and their kindness. And you'll want to come back soon there.
Enjoy Sicily! |

You will probably be asked to pay a monthly fee for insurance. It is usually reasonable and a good thing to have. |
