We did this trip last year. From Rome, the trains are 1.5-2 hours to the main Naples train station. At the train station, catch a cab unless you are really short on funds. Ask for a price upfront and look for their 'flat rate' sign in the car. Do not tip extra. If they won't quote you a flat rate, ask if anyone will loudly. They compete for business, so one will be willing to help you. Expect the cab ride to take 15 - 30 minutes.
At the main ferry station, catch a hydrofoil to Capri. It doesn't matter which company - just pick the one that comes in next. A ferry schedule is available at caprionline.com. The tickets cost under 15E and the hydrofoil takes 30-45 minutes.
The best time to go to Capri is late summer. If you have a hotel with an ocean view deck, the view is spectacular when it's clear out. By late summer, some of the tourists have cleared out and it's a little easier to get around. Have a great trip! : ) |

It will take 2 hours to go from the main station in downtown rome to main station in naples. The distance is about 150 KM or 100 miles. If you choose to go further, like to Salerno, or all the way to reggio calabria it can take up to 8 hours. Get off in Naples, and take a train or bus to the port. In Naples you can actually buy a ferry ticket in the main train station, but I would buy it at the port. Stay away from taxis. the italians will recognize your foreign and you will be charged more, they are ALL rip offs, no matter what people say. From there you can catch a hydafoil to capri. its about a 3 hour trip depending on how fast they decide to go. |

You can also take the local train from Napoli to Sorrento (which is really nice) then catch un aliscafo to Capri from there. |
