In Venice: Piazza San Marco and the Basilica, The Rialto bridge, The Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs), La Fenice Opera House, Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Pallazo del Doge, Palazzo Grassi, Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Palazzo Labia, Ca' d'Oro (Palazzo Santa Sofia), Ca' Rezzonico, Palazzo Malipiero...
I have good memories of a small hotel in Florence, The Hotel Hermes on Via Allamani, near the train station, the owner is a lovely person who speaks several languages and is very helpful. Gives good recommendations for restaurants, visits, etc.
In Rome we were in a hotel just behind Santa Maria Maggiore, not bad, but I don't remember the name, and the one in Venice didn't leave a mark on us either.
Actually I haven't named everything worth seeing...If I had this would be too long to read!
In Italy the restaurants are rather expensive.... Your best bet for food is the trattorias and cafés. The italians eat a lot at stands or cafés... Stop and eat where you see the place filled with locals, it's your best recommendation...
