Conley39 made some good points and suggestions in his response.

It's very difficult to offer truly helpful advice when your question lacks so many important details. Not only do you not say whether it's 3,000 American dollars, British pounds or Australian dollars you have to spend, you don't say where you're coming from or even how long you want to stay in Italy. It would also be helpful if you gave a few more relevant details like your age group (camping might be possible for twenty-somethings, but probably not for retirees), what you're interests are, what you particularly want to do and see, how well you speak Italian and so on.

Perhaps you might consider rephrasing your question and posting again?

3000 what? euro, pounds, dollars, some other currency? Without knowing more about where you're coming from, how long you plan to be here, etc, it's not possible to give you specific advice. Italy is fairly expensive and that doesn't sound like much if it includes two air tickets from anywhere outside Europe.

However, April to early June or September to early October are good times to visit here. The weather isn't too hot, the crowds of tourist are smaller, and prices may be lower that at the peak of the tourist season.

I use this site to book hotels here in Italy: http://www.venere.com/home/. You can sort by price and hotel rating and read reviews by past guests. Generally, the cheaper places will be smaller and further from the attractions. In Venice, you may want to consider staying on the mainland. Mestre and Lido di Jesolo are generally cheaper than staying in Venice itself, but you'll have to take a boat or the bus to the city. It will help with your budget if you find places to stay that include breakfast with the room and take advantage of that. Find restaurants that are away from the main tourist attractions - they generally have better food at better prices. You can also save by making a meal of panini or pizza or buying food in a market rather than a restaurant occassionally.

The best way to get from city to city is on the train. You can check schedules and prices here: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3fdbe14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD. Regional trains are cheapest, but also slowest. For the higher speed trains, there's a discount fare (called Amica) which may be available if you buy the ticket by midnight of the day before your trip.

I dont know where u live... but... Eurofly leaves from NY JFK. You can sometime get specials for 599 round trip. That leaves 1800 for stay. IF you dont mind renting apartments instead of hotels then I would sugget http://www.homelidays.com. I love this option. You can make your own breakfast and save money even lunch or dinner.
