My parents are visiting Rome and were wondering what the top 3 tourist attractions would be for them to go to?

I lived, studied in Italy for many years. I would certainly go to Vatican City..you can see the pope, hear the mass, go inside. It's all gold and marble, just beautiful. Religious site; History museum; Art museum all in one stop. Then there is the Roman Forum (Foro Romano)and this is very popular among tourists. The commercial, political and religious center of ancient Rome, which features the Arch of Septimus Severus, Temple of Saturn, Arch of Titus and the House of the Vestals. Also, Piazza di Spagna, or the Spanish Steps,Piazza at the foot of the Spanish Steps, "Scalla di Spagna", also known as the "Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti". Design of the steps finished by Francesco de Sanctis after generations of controversy. The church at the top of the Steps is the Trinita dei Monti, founded by the French in 1495. Depending when you go the important fashion designers in Italy will have a fashion show down the steps...this is just beautiful a MUST SEE, make sure to go to the little trattoria's for eating, the food is great and cheap... ....these are the top three but there is just so much more. CIAO...!!!!

Just got back from Rome this week, everywhere apart from the vatican is pretty walkable.

The vatican is somewhere you need to allow a day for, its fantastic but theres a lot of queueing etc.

Personally I enjoyed the Colloseum, but a short walk up and you go past some magnificent (big) buildings, and you can walk upto the Pantheon (not to be missed, given its age I found this amazing), right next to this is the via navona which has loads of nice restaurants and a nice european feel. Keep walking north and you'll hit the trevi fountain and the spanish steps.

You can pack that up in a day no probs and if your like me, have some serious wine stops ;-)

Enjoy Rome, its a great city.

If your struggling, catch the metro (its not bad in Rome).

most tourists like to go to: colleseum, pantheon, spanish steps, vatican, trevi fountain stuff like that. out of those i like the vatican(if you have time), colleseum, and the trevi fountain. the vatican and colleseum will deffinitly have tours in various languages and depending on how much you want to spend. the vatican is not only large but is very busy. i would not recomend going on a wednesday because they close the sistine chapel at 1:15. clear out the entire day for the vatican because the lines can be anywhere from 45 mins-2hr 30mins. and even though you get in, its basically amn assembly line of people moving through the differnt rooms.

Easy:

--They should start at the Spanish Steps. If you go up the steps (take your pictures), go around the corner at the top, and you'll reach the Forum (where democracy was born!). If you go through the Forum, you'll reach the Colosseum. Three famous attractions in one!

--St. Peter's is IN Vatican City, and you should definitely see both.

--Go through the Vatican City and you'll get to the Sistine Chapel, which your parents MUST see. The final room is called "Final Judgment," so delicate that they will not let you take any pictures of it. It's amazing.

Just a note on the buses: They are great, they are convenient, but the one thing I've always been told and I've always read is that you MUST be careful about pickpockets. They are notorious on the buses (I THINK the bus number is 84 or 82; it's been a couple of years), and my friend almost got picked if it weren't for the kindness of an Italian woman who made my friend sit in her seat!

It really is hard to limit it to three. I guess I would have to say the Roman Forum, Vatican city, and the Colosseum.....but that really is leaving out SO much! I guess I would have to ask why they are wanting to narrow it to only three? I must say that I have known people who don't plan on visiting Vatican city because it isn't centrally located in Rome and I think that is a huge mistake. It is easy to get there by taxi or even a hop on hop off bus (which, by the way, would allow them to see most of the major sites in Rome very easily). St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel are absolutely amazing and definitely a must see. Using this bus allows you to see more than if you were just walking. I hope that your parents have a wonderful time in Rome!
